Is this done just purely for cost reasons or do some components last longer ?

for example i see some people run an xt rear derailleur but slx cassette, do the xt rear cassette not last as long and wear quicker ?

Looking at upgrades for my bike and wonder whether to bother with xt because slx parts look good kit for the money.

mix whatever you want but 10spd can not be mixed with non 10spd kit.

and yes as things cost more they tend to be lighter which means they may not last quite as long.

yes i meant mixing of slx and xt components as i gathered it was best to use all the same speed.

I'm looking at drive train upgrades for 9 speed but think i will go for 10 speed and upgrade to this over time.

I think some of the Deore chain rings are steel compared to alu for higher end stuff and while it weights more it lasts longer.

I don't think you can go from 9 speed to 10 speed over time. As far as I know, Cassette, Mech, shifter and Chain all have to be 10 speed.
