I was the OP for that thread. Adrian Timmiss at Cadence diagnosed the cause very quickly - saddle too high. It took me a while to get used to the lower position and I was slower on the road for some time feeling that my legs couldn't deliver as much power. It took a couple of months for the pain to completely disappear. I'm now completely comfortable on the bike.
I know there are more causes than bike fit but it worked for me. If I had tried lowering the saddle myself I wouldn't have persevered with it because for a while it just didn't feel right.
