Cassette/Chain Change

I suppose this will be blindingly obvious to some, but my first attempt at such an operation so please bear with me.
The cassette on my Specialized is an 8 speed Sora and it's knackered.
Looking at the cassettes available on line, the Tiagra 9 speed cassette is cheaper(!) and why not have an extra gear? thinks I.
I realize I will need an new chain too, but as the rest of the groupset is Sora, am I OK just to swap the old 8 Speed for a new Tiagra 9 speed cassette plus new chain? I realise there will be some setting up to be done with the rear derailleur but apart from that, is it OK?
Thanks

no
the amount the rear mech moves from one sprocket to the next is determined by the shift lever
your shift lever was designed to work with an 8-speed cassette, not a 9-speed one
if you wanted to change to 9-speed you'd have to change the shifter to a 9-speed one as wellmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
Thank you Sungod - you've me a heap of cash and a lot of embarrassment!
