filling a 9spd chainset to accept 10spd rings

I'm converting my 2x9 into a 1x10, and have assumed that I could use the chainset with just a new chainring on the middle tabs. However, after setting it all up, I noticed the chainring was wobbling (not loose) left and right. Closer inspection revealed that the tabs on the chainset which aligned the mounting holes actually infringes on the 10sp ring. I'd tightened up the bolts and flexed the ring over the tabs, flat against the chainset. It looks to me like, although the BCD is the same, the way they are aligned isn't, forcing you into purchasing a new chainset.
Now, my next assumption is that I can file back the tab so that the ring can sits flush. My last assumption however got me into this conflict of standards, so can anyone suggest if I'm going to run into issues before I start working off some chaff?

same happens with 9spd rings if they are not the correct ones for the cranks.
you can still use the 9spd rings."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Or file the ring and or cranks, won't do any harm.0

I'd always file the ring (replaceable part) over the crank.... had it before and as Nick says it's not a 9/10 speed 'thing' but a chainring to crank 'thing'.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Ok thanks, I was planning on filling the chainset, but the ring would be the better option. I'll have to have a closer look - it's got this grey chunking around the inside of the ring (Dynasis XT). Dunno what material it is but I'll try and remove a little this weekend.0

Aluminium, be easy. Asuming you do mean filing - as in taking a file to it, rather than filling - ie adding material?0

Sounds like the middle ring to me, thats a composite ring. Dont file off too much, its structural!A Flock of Birds

yes, filing, removing material.
I should only be taking a mill or two from below the mounting hole, not around it or anywhere else. It contacts the aligning tab perpendicular to the rotor (directly between the hole and the axle).0 -
Had to do exactly the same when fitting a shimano ring to a sram crank. Few minutes with a file and it was fine.0

Use a mirror or just go wild and risk it?0 -
You know what is most interesting? Pinnick was right, it was structural. I can't stand up anymore...0
