Fat people

Fat people are discriminated against as are all people who don't fit with whatever the societal norm is of that time. There was a time (not so long agao) when fat men were very attractive to women as it demonstrated they could provide very well for themselves and their offspring - now women want skinny vampires!
The de-evolution of the human race is underway.0 -

Coincidence? 8)
Coincidence?
No it's not a coincidence it's an irrelevent anecdote.
I once asked a woman on a bus to put out her cigarette. She told me her grandmother lived to 92 years old and smoked all her life so smoking wasn't bad for you. I don't know if you meant your comment seriously but if you did it's no more valid than hers.
Anecdotes aren't evidence.
I've added some smilies to help you out, though I didn't offer any evidence, I just stated 2 facts.
Although, I would add that the woman in your story had a valid opinion. Everybody's opinion is valid. It may not be scientifically rigorous, doesn't mean it's not valid. But that's a different discussion.0 -
To answer your question; yes and rightly so. It's not the kind of thing we should be encouraging by giving them more money for them to use to buy more food.0

Maybe that is addressed by:ben@31 wrote:I saw one theory recently that healthy food costs more to buy. So if you are unemployed, the lack of income makes it harder to eat healthy.
Henry the 8th isn't on the throne anymore. It's not an achievement to be fat.0 -
I think in general, being fat means you have less willpower and I'm sure there is a correlation to laziness and low achievers. I personally blamed work, sat behind a desk but that didnt make me fat, eating crap and doing no excessive made me fat and since I've eaten less crap and done a little excersise I've lost over half a stone.Living MY dream.0

Congratulations on your loss! Well done for making a start. You sound like a determined person.
If you ate no crap at all think what a bigger difference that will make.

That's a big responsibility, it's one thing sticking needles in yourself...
Carbs are not a problem, quantity is, low GI is good but more importantly low GL (glycemic load) for example average portion size plate of chips (high GI) for a diabetic is six thin chips, you ever tried to eat only six chips :shock:my isetta is a 300cc bike0 -

What does he race VTech?
Charlie Kimball of IndyCar famously* races with diabetes. He's even sponsored by Novo Nordisk.
*hardly famously, i must be the only person that watches IndyCar anymore....0 -
He races GT cars at the moment, he will enter full time within the next two years hopefully.
He just gets on with it, I think most people to be honest.Living MY dream.0 -
It amazes me how many people are overweight. I noticed this yesterday, I'd guess 85% of my work colleagues are overweight with (probably) an additional 5% classed as obese. So if your fat and out of work come to Newcastle, we welcome you and your chins.0

Conversely none of my work colleagues are overweight... then again I do work from home and if I started to worry about it I think I'd be more worried about schizophrenia and talking about myselfPain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.0 -
If airlines charged by combined weight of passenger and luggage, would this be 'exploitation' ?0

No it would be 'fair'.
I'm around 70Kg, it never seems just to me that I'd get charged if my luggage is 1 kg overweight whilst some bloater gets away with carrying my weight of lard on with them.
The older I get, the better I was.0 -

You would be in a minefield, some people are obese due to illness and right off the bat, you cant fight that within a corporate. Contrary to the other thread, I do feel if you are overweight you should be penalised but to what degree ? I felt the penalty was too harsh so posted about it, others disagreed and thought it should have been far more but overall they were underweight as 4 people travelled. Im not sure what is fair and what isnt, but manners and giving good advice to customers is something I think should be a given.Living MY dream.0 -

I completely agree, but I sense the fatties would try the 'we are being exploited' when its within their purview to sort the issue out. Either lose weight (unless you'll try the old excuse of a medical condition) or take less luggage
Person 1 : I'm not fat, my doctor says I have a medical condition
Person 2 ; Did he prescribe a course of cream cakes, fried foods and sweets as thats what you're eating all the time

I knew a 'festively plump' bloke once who was a carpet fitter. Could never imagine him being able to fit a carpet in a small room - like a WC. I think he did it on purpose to avoid the crappy jobs....0
-
As somebody who has been 'fat' (300 pounds) i can safely say that i am more capable on doing my job (and to a higher standard) now that i have lost 70 pounds.
My concentration is better, i'm generally feeling healthier which means i'm ill less often. Whilst my employer would never openly discriminate i think (in my case) i'm more employable now than i was 3 years ago. And my job in no ways requires me to be 'fit' (desk job - designer)0 -
To be honest, just come and take a walk round my workplace to see where fat people get a job. I'm 5ft 5 and weigh 13 1/2st and I manage to feel reasonably trim with a BMI of just over 32. It's a wonder some of hthe fellas (and women) can put one foot in front of the other.
Mind you though, the crap they serve in the canteen probably doesn't help. Amazingly I've lost 3 1/2st in the two years I've been a bus driver. The only disability in life is a poor attitude.0
