  • i have a vitus vee-1 2013 that i commute on and it is a great bike, i looked around on here and at reviews before i purchased mine. And i am pleased to say it lived up to every expectation, depending on your area you may want to change the freewheel to suffice if its hilly or flat. The standard one is fine but its all based on personal fitness/preference. Its nice and light Weighing in at just under 11kg (for the 19"frame)
It is available through Chain Reaction Cycles and comes in a few different styles 26" or 29" wheel plus there are ones with disc brakes named as Dee-1

Heres a link to a review of the 2012 model (dont think theres much difference?)

    Or The 2013 29"

Just my suggestion and i belive they have also decreased the price since i bought mine too so both these fit nicely under your £300 budget.

Another vote for the Vee-1, I have one and it's unkillable, don't bother with the Dee-1 with discs, the V-brakes are fine as they are.

I'm in the middle of building up an old Raleigh Record Sprint into a singlespeed, total outlay will be just over £100.

I think the Vitus Vee-1 is fast attaining 'cult' status. I know of about a dozen people around these and other forums that own them now - I have the 29-er version - and everyone says just what a great bike they are. I may be demented but whenever I get out for a ride on mine, I always end up with a huge smile on my face. Just a great fun bike that's actually built brilliantly too - a real bargain.

Ha ha - you're probably right. And that may well be the attraction!

I think I may have to short list this bike for my Cycle2Work upgrade.

Do any LBS stock these and are they suitable for girls? Always being asked what bike to get and I'm a massive SS advocate but most cheap bikes with gears or sit up and beg machines <£300 are made of cast iron and cheese.

Would love to know how much it weights. What do you think of this? I think it looks nice.

26lb so they (halfords) say does look a bit cheap around the edges but other wise looks fine.

I had a "Real" bike from Halfords and the build quality was absolutely shocking.

Although it was poorly set up by the shop, I had the distinct impression it was cobbled together from the parts bin, the frame was more like an MTB frame than one for a "classic" and it just seemed very cheap and built to a very low budget.
