why do i need a cassette spacer

Just bought a set of cross rides only to put my 10 speed cassette on and there is loads of play, a spacer would sort this but never needed before why now,cheers
2011 on one 456 carbon x9

And seen as its 10 SPD cassettte on older wheels what size do I get

You need the Mavic spacer, doesn't matter about speed

Oh do all mavic hubs need this then

as above you have an M10 body so you need the Mavic spacer that should have come with the wheels as new to allow you to use any shimano cassette.
if using a shimano higher level road cassette you would need the mavic spacer and the shimano spacer.
