Spindle length in Octalink versus ST.

Hi all, not sure if anyone can help with this one. (it's essentially just out of interest, anyway)
If I was to replace an octalink BB and crankset with a square taper one of the same spindle length would the crank arms still be the same width apart?
I suppose what I'm really asking is do the spindles project into the ends of the cranks arms the same distance or does one have more overlap then the other?

yes no and maybe.
if you want the same chainline you must use the correct BB for the cranks.
and no it all depends on what was desigined for what."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Different ST cranks need different axle lengths to get the same chainline, so as Nick says, what your Octalink axle width is is irrelevant, just measure the chainline you have now, refer to the techdocs for your new crankset and buy the right ST BB.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
