Any one got and horrific stories from riding ie crashes bikes braking injuries cars pulling out on you ?

Reason I ask is the lad that runs my local gym has only just returned back to work from a cycling accident where a car didn't see him and only thing todo was hit the wall at 25mph+ he was wearing a helmet and the car didn't stop he said he was knocked out for 15 mins and when he came round he didn't even no his own name it the took a further 5 mins to get his head around things and realise he was in hospital he suffered a broken arm dislocated shoulder and major swelling to his face.

When he told me it made me think twice about the speed I do down this particular hill with traffic he's made a full recovery but won't get back on a bike it's put him rite off. Such a shame as in the summer we done a 35 mile charity ride with the gym and he really enjoyed it ... I did ask him if its ok to talk about him on here lol
When i die I just hope the wife doesn't sell my stuff for what I told her I paid for it other wise someone will be getting a mega deal!!!

  • horrible thing to happen to him and even worse its scared him so much he wont even get on a bike again.some car drivers are total knobheads....cant believe the w4nker didnt even stop,a few mins needed exercising your fist on his face is needed there.

i have a friend who said he hated cyclists and every time he drove past them he went a close as he could to them, didnt matter what i said to him and warned him what could happen or he could kill someone sometime he kept at it,sometimes we got into a row about but it he kept at it.

fortunately he's finally wakened up to it now but i imagine there are still his type of people out there.(no words can describe these people as i could sit here and type all kinds of expletives all day)

+2 yeah I have seen a lot of motorist not being gracious on the road and it's not always the young ones but old people who feel cyclist belong on paths.

It's a shame really but I won't let it put me off if i can help but can see why someone would be put off, especially when you hear your own friends say they will make it as hard as possible for a cyclist on the road.
  • Two weeks ago I got cut up by a prick pulling into a fuel station and then slamming on with me right behind him. I whacked the roof with my fist and pulled up in a rage at the side of the drivers window. He wound it down in a rage and before I knew what had happened I'd punched him square in the face. He wound the window up quick and sped off like a lunatic. My heart was going ten to the dozen which while awesome for my fitness wasnt ideal for my state of mind.

Had a bus try to run me into a parked car today, that was charming but spotted he was being a kn**jockey well in advance thankfully. Luckily for him I was on my first club ride & didn't chase him down in front of someone I'd just met and kick his door in.

The vast majority of the time it is all good though.

Good on you mate maybe his mindset will change to just nice to hear nothing bad happened to you. I go cycling with my friend mostly and he has a violent temper when things like that happen but he can also bit with his bark so I always hope we have a stress free day on the roads as I don't really condone violence but at same time don't mind it when someone deserving of it gets a clip round the ear lol.

I think when you put someones life at risk just for being upset that hes a cyclist then you deserve a smack in the face so to all you rodies out their watch out for pride4ever lol.

Most of us on the run are still reeling at being handed our arses on a plate on whitedown and box hill. What happened to you at the headley turning? We headed back through Walton on the hill. You missed some more climbing :D

Even if I wasn't a cyclist I'd have dropped this moron like something very hot.

A few weeks ago I was doing one of my usual routes and had some douchebag try and run me off the road for no apparent reason, and shout something like who the f**k do you think you are out of the window. He deliberately stayed close in front of me so at the next zebra crossing and lights he could pull pretty much onto the pavement to block me.

That was the worst it's ever been luckily. Oh, and I was out just before Christmas and there were another couple of dbags out in a car letting off an air horn at pedestrians and cyclists (the very loud type you get at football matches). I admit I found it quite funny but if it'd shocked me or another cyclist into falling into the road it could've been very nasty.

Honestly bro its not at all like me, Im not a violent person but I guess the incremental bad behavior of motorists had built up in me to the point that I did it without really thinking about it.

I have a colleague whose son went out on his BMX to ride on the local mine bing. The lad didn't take his helmet so dad cycled up to the top of the bing to take the helmet to his son. Unfortunately dad missed a path and went over the edge and fell very badly down the bing.

He was very badly injured, was helicoptored to hospital and "died" during the process. He was recusitated and subsequently spent weeks in hospital and months off work.

He's back to work now but will probably never be 100%.

The son saw it all and has required councelling.

Al very sobering and not a car in sight.

Haha, seen on the kw forum, waiting for my sign up to be approved! I went left with the others, maybe wrongly assuming it was the quicker way back?! Those roads are all a bit unknown to me!
  • Many years ago got hit by a car turning left that didn’t see me coming the other way , hit me with their front left wing hard, i went up over the bonnet and through the front wind screen , it was early evening twilight conditions, never have rode at that time of day again.
  • I once had a situation in a residential area on the edge of pocklington there was a car behind me trying to get past. Bear in mind it was a 20mph zone and I was easy doing that. I see a car up ahead pulling up to the junction at a side street on the right, they were turning left to go the opposite direction to myself and the car behind me. As I saw them pull up I edged out to take a primary position so the car behind had to stay behind me. The car in the side street pulled out, as the car behind me decided to pan it and try and over take, they then cut me up forcing me toward the kerb so they didn't hit the car coming out the junction.

They hit the brakes so I did all I could to get to the gap between their front left corner and the kerb, I made it but I ripped my shorts on their wing mirror. That said their wing mirror came off worse than me and my shorts.
“If you worried about falling off the bike, you’d never get on.”

  • What really p***** me of is motorists comming out of junctions and observing to their left only. I see this daily whilst on my bike.

Last week I was cycling at speed past a junction only to have a lady driver come flying out of the junction without observing to her right hand side, I closed my eyes and waited for the impact only to feel her bumper brush against my ankle. We both pulled over and she was extremely apologetic though, I felt like having a rant but decided against it as it looked like she in shock her self.

Made me remember how important it is to try and anticipate over road users mistakes and reactions as well
