Helmets - high forehead / tall head

Ok, I have trouble getting a decent fit helmet. The reason is I have a high forehead, think Dec from Ant and Dec....

Hopefully without too much ridicule and abuse, does anyone have a suggestion for a new road lid that sits "around" the head rather than on top of it. I'm looking at Mavic Plasma, Limar 104, LAS etc but there are no local stockists for those brands to go and try on.

I currently have a mid range specialized prevail that looks like a mushroom on me although its a great looking (IMO) lid sat on the shelf.

Anyone else with a large forehead / long head?

  • Hi

I have a funny shaped head and started off with a Specialized Echelon which after 3 months use discovered really was the wrong size and not very safe. It seemed to perch on top of my head leaving my forehead exposed. Back in December I switched to http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_271409 which I have to say fits very snug, is light years away from the fit the Spesh had. If you are a member of british cycling you can get 10% discount.

Las Victory and Kask Mojito are worth looking at, both have a lot of adjustment in them and aren't as mushroomy looking as Giro's and Spesh helmets. It's a bit of hassle but I'd just order 2 or 3 from Wiggle and return the ones you don't want (it's free, you just drop them off at a collect+ point).

After being hit by a drunk driver, flying 15 feet and landing head first on my helmet, I am a Giro loyal for life. I had a Giro Ionos from Lance Armstrong signature series. It was the previous high-end helmet from Giro's product line. one of the best fitting helmets i have used.

At sale i bought the much higher priced current series Giro Aeon which disappoint's against the Ionos. 100 gram lighter but extremely flimsy, lower uqality finish and less comfy. First one came cracked out of the box.

Will urge you to give the Giro Ionos a try unless you are a weight weenie.

  • Try a Kask K10 - they have a range of adjustment that would fit most heads and are very comfortable aswell.

    Hi Allmountain76,

Just a quick intro, my name is Mike Cotty and I help with Mavic's community management (which in English means if riders are looking for product knowledge or have questions then I'll try and help out). Fear not, I'm not here to try and sell a Plasma helmet to you, that's not the point at all, I'm here just to give info that may be useful to you and others that may be in a similar situation. So, intro over :)

Mavic's number one criteria when developing their helmet range was comfort. During the 3 year development process over 25,000 head shapes were analysed and the data used to optimise the internal shape and volume, pad design / density and retention system - with each element helping to reduce the pressure that a helmet puts on your head when riding. If a helmet fits well and is comfortable then it'll naturally offer higher performance to the rider. You can certainly find lighter helmets on the market but weight was only a secondary factor over comfort for Mavic.

One thing that I found really interesting when I was learning about their helmet range is that Mavic design and produce everything exclusively, meaning they don't buy anything off the shelf and simply rebrand it (from buckles and straps all the way through to retention systems). This ensures each part performs exactly as it was intended and keeps quality to a very high level.

There are a couple of cool little videos that give some details of the development process, fit and technology at:

    http://www.mavic.com/en/2013-helmet-ran ... elmets2013

At the end of the day it really is good to try a selection of helmets on whenever possible to see what ultimately feels best for your exact head shape.

Ride safe and best of luck!

I posted a question on helmets a few weeks back as I was sick of looking & trying on helmets.
A lot said Kask, so I found a localish dealer and went over, I liked the K50 evo, the Mojito and
the Vertigo. After about an hour of trying the three helmets I purchased a Vertigo Team Sky as
I got it for £110. The next day I returned it for the Mojito as it was the much better fit. I picked
the Vertigo as I got £55 off it and at the time I could not see pat the discount !!!!!

The kask Mojito is a super helmet, the fit, the finish and it's so light. It's well worth finding a local
    stockist and trying one on.
  • I have a similar shaped head to the op (if my mental image of the description is anywhere near accurate) and I am really comfortable in the Kask K50 evo. Highly recommended!
  • Many thanks all for the advice. Kask seems to be coming out as the best bet to try. Ill try and find a local dealer and if not do the Wiggle order thing.

@Mike from Mavic - if you can help with letting me know where a local dealer to Kendal, Cumbria would be with a decent stock of lids that would be great. I'd love a Plasma and the weight isnt a big concern, the fit, safety and overall look are the primary concerns.

And regarding the Ecehlon and "getting the right size" comment - i always try on and buy from a LBS, rest assured the size is not the issue.

Here are some options close to you. Best to give a quick call to check their stock situation of the Plasma.

  • None in at Wheelbase or Evans, already tried both ports of call. Evans will order them in if i pay and get a refund on the ones i dont want....
  • Sorry to hear that. Leisure Lakes Lancaster could be an option, although like Keswick Bikes (details below) they're a little further from Kendal.

I think Giro's tend to sit quite high on the head.

I've got a Lzer O2, it fits well, worth a look I reckon.

Bell sit very low in my experience (Sweep model)and often interfere with the top of my glasses. With a tall forehead the Bell maybe perfect. Worth a try.

I've changed to a Kask Mojito now and for my big bonce it's just perfect.
