So if I change my wheels, do I need a new cassette as was hinted to me this week ?

depends if you want to swop over the cassette from your old wheels or not? And that'll depend on how worn your old chain/cassette is.
All lies and jest..still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest....

No you don't. If the cassette needs replacing, it needs replacing, but changing wheels doesn't require a new cassette. You do need to make sure that the wheels have the correct cassette fitting - either Shimano/SRAM or Campagnolo, depending on your groupset.

Only reasons I can see to have a new cassette are

1 the current one is worn
2 you want to regularly swap out the existing wheel - say for a turbo wheel
3 you want a different ratio on the back

If 1 then you need to check/replace your chain too.
