Direct mount chain guards?

I'm converting my 2011 Stumpjumper from 3x10 to 1x10 but am having a dilemma when considering the chain security options. My current front mech is direct mounted - "S1 direct mount for DMD" according to the specs on the Specialized website.

- I've no ISCG tabs
- I don't think a seat tube guard would fit
- I believe the press fit BB could cause problems for a BB guard

I've seen an E-13 XCX direct mount version but it seems to be compatible with S3 direct mounting, which I'm guessing is different to S1!?

Any ideas? Anyone converted a similar age Stumpjumper with success?

    Chain GUIDE?

Why not just keep the front mech locked out on the stops?

Is your direct mount hi or low?

isnt the 1/2/3 on an S mount actually to do with how tall the mech is, to allow for different ring sizes, not to do with the placement of the mount itself. Shimano for example has only one fitting, e-type DMD which will also fit your frame. I think you'll be find with the XCX, I have one, works well (on a Zesty).

  • Chain GUIDE?

Oops, getting my bash guards and chain guides in a muddle.

I'm not sure about the whole 1/2/3 thing, I can't find much info about them all.

  • I'm not sure, how do I tell?

"SRAM X.7, 10-speed, S1 direct mount for DMD, bottom pull"

Does the "bottom pull" indicate low?

No, bottom pull indiactes taht the cable comes from below.

Like clamps, some are hi mount (attachments above cage) some low, that guide in the link is low mounted.

See front mech compatability info on this page.

Most spec's are low mount (e type in Shimano speak). Easy way to tell. If it has two bolts to mount to the frame nearly horizontal near the BB (below the mech), its low mount. If it has two bolts above the mech on the seat tube, in a vertical alignment, its high mount.

  • Thanks guys, it's a low mount then, here's a pic, still not sure which chain guide will fit.
