Sportive Ascent Statistics

This year I've stepped up my early season cycling with several sportives; I completed the Kentish Killer this weekend (inside of 5 hours which I was pretty pleased with!) and am signed up to do the smaller Puncheur Sportive in a couple of weekends time.
What I'm wondering is how the organisers calculate the 'total ascent' figures that they quote on the event websites etc. The Kentish Killer organisers stated a total ~6500 feet (roughly 2000m) of climbing for the 70 mile course and the Puncheur guys say 1712m total ascent for their 65 mile route.
I've mapped both of the routes on mapmyride and they come out at 1233m and 804m respectively, which is way short (approx. 50%) of what the organisers says. Is mapmyride just woefully inaccurate when it comes to stuff like this, or do the organisers count the descents as well as the ascents in the stats?!

My wild stab in the dark would be...
The altitude data used by MapMyRide may well be very coarse grained. Consequently, it may well be missing out a lot of the smaller lumps n' bumps in terrain - the sort of stuff that registers in the head as "I'm going up a bit" rather than "I'm climbing" - which, when added up, actually account for quite a bit of total ascent.Mangeur0
