What size bike??

Hi all,
I ride a 17.5 inch mountain bike, I am now looking to buy a single speed/hybrid as I commute to work.
I am confused as to which size I need, I have seen a 52cm bike which I like but that works out around 20inches!!
I am 5ft 7ish, do I go for a larger size bike with road bikes??
I am buying secondhand, more than likely without viewing/riding it first.
Can anyone help

Depends on the model in question. The size listed is but one tube, there are other things to consider. If you don't have access to the figures, or understand them, then trying them is the only way.
