Loose spoke

At the weekend I noticed that the rear tyre on my patriot has a loose spoke. I am not sure how long the spoke has been loose. The wheel spins true and all other spokes are in tension. Can I just tighten the spoke at the nipple opposed to taking it to LBS and having them all re done? What would people reccomend.

I have a Sun MTX wheelset incase it's relevant.

  • Not sure how that works? A loose spoke should mean it is out of true, unless it is compensating in some way.

Anyway get it done back up, check it is the correct tension by pinging it an listening for a similar note to others around it.
  • Retighten it and mark it somehow. check if come loose again.

    Retighten....

Yes a spoke can come loose without it going out of true....in fact my commuter currently has a snapped spoke and the wheel is only about 2mm out of true (noticeable as the tyre is very close to the frame).
