Clunk sound from rear hub

Hi,

So I was riding along...and I heard a clunk sound. I came to the realisation that it happens when I start pedaling.

Example: Going around a corner coasting, start pedaling *immediate clunk sound* (very loud too).

I tested it out when I got home on the turbo. Figured it was coming from the rear section. Tightened cassette, still there. So I then removed the cassette and tried to turn the freehub by hand (clockwise).

I tried to emulate a stop and go situation by turning the freehub back and forth. At random points, it made a clunk sound. Less amplified than while I was riding.

Any ideas what this might be? Is it a simple fix or do I need new parts?

Thanks.

  • Might be wear of the ratchet ring. The pawls slip at some points and engage the following tooth. Worth having a look if it is easy convenient to do so.
    Which hub?

  • Possible warning, i had this for a while and thought it was the cassette/chain. After they were replaced it still did it. Now the freehub has started making obvious bearing , creaking noises. Im thinking it was related. Considering cost of new hub plus allen key, i just bought a new wheel and saved myself the hassle.

    It's a dura ace hub.

At worst, I would've thought the freehub needs replacing?

If I got it right, which I am not sure, it is rather the ratchet... I can't remember if it is integrated in Dura Ace Freehubs or comes as part of the hub as in Taiwanese hubs....
