Another great ride (and a bit of TdF)

Ok, first things first: I know I posted one of these last week, and I hereby solemnly swear that I will not post one every Saturday!!
But it was a milestone ride for me – 71 miles, my furthest ever! This time last year I was 46, considerably heavier and smoking 20 a day, so all is good
With over 3000ft of ascent to boot I’m feeling really pleased, and it was fantastic fun eating up the miles. Ave time was poor 14.2mph, but i knew it was going to be a long one so was pacing myself
Out from home along the A650 through Bradford and on to Keighley then I picked up the 2014 tdF stage 2 route, up and over the moors to Hebden Bridge. I got a bit lost in Oxenhope so my strava log isn’t quite the proper tdf route – but it’s pretty close.

It was a cracking sunny day, a bit of a nip in the air and a lot of snow still lying on the tops
The wooosh down into Hebden Bridge was fantastic!
Then back along the Calder valley. The plan was to come straight home, but as i came through Ravensthorpe i was still feeling amazingly strong so I added a diversion back up to Bradford first.
What I don’t really understand is why I’m feeling less shattered now than i was after 39 miles last weekend? I did try out SIS Caffeine gels (3 of them + a block of flapjack) today. If they are the difference they are truly remarkable.
Well just wanted to share. What has everyone else been up to today?

Congrats, that looks a brilliant effort today. I have a bit of a cold but I forced myself out this afternoon. Did 31 miles with 2000 feet of ascent, Strava says 15mph average. It felt like a very up and down ride. Last five miles a bit of a struggle as my calf was tight and quads cramping a little. I normally pop a nuun tab in my drink but figured that in winter I wouldnt be sweating too much. Obviously I was wrong. Think I might go on the club run tomorrow morning - it will be about 40 miles. Slowly getting some miles back in my legs. ITBs a bit tight now so foam roller punishment upcoming!

Picky lol
It had just fallen over (that snow wasn't all that firm) and the chain jumped off, but by the time I'd spotted it my phone battery had died. So making the best of a bad job with the pic - sorry0 -
Well done on the distance Phil. Wont be long till you hit the century!0

Nice one Phil think i'd have got lost more than the 2-3 times you did on that ride0

70miles on your own is hard work.
Just a small ride for me today. Doing my first club run tomorrow and was trying to save my legs but had to go out in the sunshine for a bit.0 -
Great effort Phil, well done lad! 100 miler will be a piece of cake on a flatter routeAll lies and jest..still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest....0

Nowt poor about that, decent average IMO. Did my 19 mile training loop @ 15mph and was chuffed, only the second time I've cracked the 15mph mark.0

Well done Phil, took my Ribble through Hebden Bridge yesterday too, though I can't say I remember seeing you
Didn't manage as many miles as you either :oops:0 -
Wakefield to Askern and back...53 miles on some of the easiest flat land around these parts. Weather-glorious.the deeper the section the deeper the pleasure.0

It's a very long time since anyone called me "Lad". Made my day
Only managed 35 miles off Sunday though - was completely drained0 -

Good work Phil!0

Good effort for a solo ride Phil. You seem quite local - I'm based in Gildersome. Have you ventured out Otley way? There's a great climb called Norwood Edge.0

East Ardsley here, and I know Gildersome - i cut through it on one of my mountain bike routes (to Tong, then bridleways to calverly woods, and home along the canal).
I was by Norwood two weekends ago on a mountain bike orienteering event. I elected not to nip down the climb to pick up a control, just to cycle right back up it though!
Otley is a good idea, I think i'll have to cycle out that way soon.
@thegibdog - that's a good thought too0 -

Good work though!
Interesting (and well spotted, id missed that) I took the stats from Garmin Connect:
Moving Time: 4:59:29
Elapsed Time: 5:40:06
Avg Moving Speed: 14.2 mph
Max Speed: 42.9 mph
I used moving average, I wonder if Strava just divides total distance, by total time. I prefer moving average as I don't want to count photo or cafe stops0
