The sound of ... FLEX ?

Hello,

I have recently bought a new pair of wheels. For your information i am 1.92 m and weight 95 kgs. Twice the last month I heard a "squak" every time i pedalled off the saddle in order to climd a small hill fast. So after 3, 4 "squacks" i get back in the saddle to avoid any bad incident.

Do you think that maybe i am too heavy for my wheels ? Is it the sound of flex ?

Thanx in advance

  • Which wheels? Why did you buy wheels inadequate for your weight?
Remember the weight limit is what it is.. a limit... it means they are safe to ride within that limit, but not ideal. Imagine running your car at the max speed it can do the all time...

IT's Dura Ace C24 set of wheels ....

Not good for you, no... they are lightweight for light people, you are heavy and assume powerful, as your height/weight suggests. You need something way stiffer... among the factory wheels Ksyrium Elite might fit the bill, but really , a set of 32 spokes will be spot on for you.
Deep section carbon wheels will be OK too, but they are very expensive and not very good in the wet, so not your everyday wheels

It's a shame as there is a thread per day on this forum talking about this very issue and you could have saved yourself a lot of money

    Some general advice here

Putting it across rather bluntly and to the point, wouldn't the easiest solution be to lose 15kg of your own bodyweight? I know it's easier said than done, but could give you a greater incentive to use those wheels once you are down in weight.

It is not the weight, it is the power, the guy is not fat at all, if you look at the proportions...

Floppy wheels give no trouble to obese riders in terms of flex...

  • The C24 is known for noise as the pawls engage under load, it's discussed here:

If people keep asking the same question then surely those with the correct knowledge will keep having to give the same answer.

Maybe I am stuck with Machine Head, but the problem you mention is not the one the OP experiences.
It could be flex leading to rub or it could be bearings related... the wheels are near new and Shimano bearings are very durable... given the size of the OP, I am inclined to think he is right, as reported by many other users, these wheels are not very stiff

Have you been experiencing the noise since you bought them?

According to this lot, it's not to do with the wheels:

Perhaps his quick releases aren't done up tight enough. Loose bearings can be easily tested by trying to rock the wheel side to side when off the bike. How about typing some constructive comments instead of telling him to sell his wheels which are good enough for the pro peleton to use

I never suggested to sell... I said they are not and never will be wheels ideal for him. Up to the OP to decide to keep them regardless, they are perfectly rideable... Just made for someone else, hence probably the problem, as reported by many.
As far as I am aware, nobody in the PRO peloton rides these and even if some did, nobody in peloton weighs 95 Kg. big guys like Cancellara are not that big... I am 73 Kg and Cancellara's jersey is too small for me... I did try it on in Belgium.

so which is it, the power or the weight? If it's the weight then why write that it's the power. If it's the power are you honestly suggesting that the OP puts out more power than Cancellara?

Keep digging that hole for yourself, this is fun

Listen, I have no strength to go on about this with you. Clearly you have a problem with my advice. I have no problem with you and have better things to do than digging the net to find evidence that contradicts you.
It is a nice day and I will instead head out for my first ride on tubulars in 2013, you keep having fun finding my contraddictions' I am sure the OP finds it all very useful 8)

Beside what you find funny, which of course is arguable, are you so sure I have been proved wrong?
The C24 clincher/tubeless in question are not the full carbon c24 tubular wheels, which being full carbon rims are a lot stiffer than a 390 grams rim made of alloy and bonded composite.
While the former are good for many light riders and safe to ride for heavier riders, they are unsatisfactory for very powerful riders, who often are quite heavy too. This is not my opinion, it is a fact, On this very forum you will find Several comments about the lateral flex in Shimano DA, 6700 and RS80 wheels, which share a lot of the design.

It is virtually impossible to design a Clincher wheel with an alloy or hybrid alloy rim weighing 390 grams and Laced with only 20 spokes which is stiff enough for all users. You either use a much deeper/wider/heavier rim or you swap to full carbon or you use a higher number of spokes or you use massively overengineered spokes... I am afraid there is no Shimano patent that works as a shortcut

Not at all. Just do not get why folk need to question everyone on everything. Especially when someone does stuff at a high level and knows what they are talking about.

Which in principle is fine, but it gets annoying when it detracts from sensible advice that may actually benefit someone.

The OP clearly has issues with the wheels so no amount of debate is going to change that.

For the OP at least they are not fit for purpose. He needs to do something about it and all this tennis is not helping him to reach a decision based on facts.

I'll go back to cleaning my bike, at least there I can not be wrong

You can only offer up advice and if the OP decides to take it thats their call dude. Hence why I never try to tell someone what bike to buy. Who the hell am I to say what bike someone else should own?

Anyway, if you need any cleaning adv.....I tell you what I'll leave you to it.
