So doing my usual road biking news search I came across 4 amateur cyclists looking to cycle 4000miles in 8days from Seattle to key west, non-stop. Is this even possible??? I found this article and a video trailer on them. What's your thoughts on if this is achievable

And they have a Facebook page at www.facebook.com/point2pointcycle

Interested in what everyone's opinion is on this? What sort of training would an event like this require?

Thanks

  • Sounds similar to the RAAM race which is circa 3,000 miles in I think the team record was just over 5 days?
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

  • Just been reading up on Tommy - what an amazing guy. I can't believe how some people really can just keep pushing themselves to the extremes. One day I would love to do something like that. Was Tommy a professional or just an ordinary guy? It is stories like these that inspire me to push myself further every day. Just been reading more on this point2point cycle. One of the guts has never cycled before andhis reason for doing it is to honour the memory of his best friend who was killed whilst serving in the marines. Inspirational is not the word! The other members have ran 2000miles in 75 days in 2010! Insane!

He was just an 'ordinary' guy but in those days because he was a highly talented cyclist he attracted the support of various people and industries and so he became 'professional' in the sense that he didnt make any money but he was supported throughout his record attempt - this lost him his opportunity to return to amateur status later after the war.
Such were the rules in those days.
He also did it as a vegetarian - his days working in a pie makers , I think in Burslem put him off meat for life.
You can actually get a small book about Tommy via Amazon...

    It's a relay though - they're only cycling 1000 miles each over 8 days. That's pretty unspectacular.

They've still to average in excess of 20mph and even if they are all doing the same 1000 miles that I reckon is still impressive. This is though from some one who hasn't done more than 80 miles in a day.

An amazing web site, first world record of 36,000 miles in a year in 1911, given the state of bikes and roads then its unbelievable.

You are doing a huge disservice to the individuals doing the challenge - your partner and friends - by spamming so many newsgroups and pretending you don't know and aren't intimately involved with it. Stop doing it, admit your relationship and maybe people will be more interested.

As it is you're just a misleading spammer who makes the challenge look crap and I suspect it's all just a scam and the money raised is just going to go into your pocket. So would advise everyone not to sponsor them.

    Ah, I see
  • This is not a scam - I am new to forums and didn't realise you were not to put the same topic into different forums. E
Hitch I have apologised for before. I wanted to generate a discussion about the cycle itself and whether ppl thought it was possible. I thought if I posted it as a non cyclist no one would give their actual opinion. I can assure you that all the money raised goes straight to the charity. It's set up via just giving and if u look in my posts not one has a link to the charity page. If I was looking for donations I would have posted the donation link but all I have asked is peoples opinion on whether or not they believe, in their opinion, if the challenge is feasible. As a result, I have had mixed feedback with some thinking it's easy as its a relay, others thinking its impossible and others thinking its going to be tough. That was all I was looking for from these posts. Yes I posted on 3 different bike forum websites to get an array of feedback and also I didn't know which was the best one to post it in. I also posted in sub-topics I thought it was relevant to and just realised after ppl told me that you don't do that. I didn't know. Sorry if I have offended anyone by doing that it was not an intention to spam it was me being new to forums. If what I have done is wrong or offended you - I apologise but my sold aim of posting on the forums was to generate a discussion around the feasibility of it all. I'm offended you think people would try and scam in the memory of a friend. But that is your opinion and you are entitled to it.

I wouldn't say it's unspectacular, when you break it down, relay or not there still covering 500m a day. That's good going in my book. So 125 mile a day each. Include fatigue, heat, etc etc and there still going to have to ride at an avg speed of 21 mile an hour. Now that may sound super fast to some or not so much to others but to push 21mph avg speed over 6 hours on undulating terrain is pretty spectacular if you think about it.
