Greetings all. I am in the process of sorting out my new bike to replace my old road bike. I have chosen the Lynskey Sportive disc Ti frame. My LBS have quoted me £3075 to source the parts, build time, fitting & delivery. The component parts are as follows in addition to the genuine Lynskey fork and headset. The frame is £1300, the fork £200 and the headset is £54;

Shimano Ultegra 6700 STI levers
Shimano Ultegra 6700 crank/chainset 53/39
Shimano Ultegra 6700 10sp sprocket 12/30
Shimano Ultegra 6700 chain
Avid BB7 disc brakes + rotors
32 spoke Hope hubs on DT Swiss rims (around the £500 mark all in)

The rest - seat stem, saddle, h/bars and bar tape is going to be middle of road grade stuff. Okay, I've sourced the majority of parts online from places like Ribble and Wiggle to give me a comparison and I can get all the items for just under £2500 if I replace the Hope/DT Swiss handbuilt wheels for something like Kysirium Equipe's. Taking the wheel cost difference away I am paying in the region of £400 for the LBS to source, fit, build and deliver.

Does this seem like a good price? I am considering buying the bb and headset tools and doing a self build to save a wopping £500 but I do like the handbuilt wheel choice the LBS quoted. My first thought was the price was a bit steep for an LBS build but I am not sure now. Thoughts please!

*EDIT _ Damn, sorry I posted to the wrong forum.

    I don't work in a bike so can't fairly comment on if the £400 is expensive or not, it seems a lot but they obviously have to make a living etc.What strikes me though is that there's no job on a new build like that, that can't be done by the home mechanic. The only thing that might be cost effective is to get a lbs to do is the headset.

    In the long run, you'll save £400 ish (-£100 for tools very rough guess), get satisfaction and learn a lot from doing the job and also have tools to keep for life if you do anything else.

    £400 is a lot for a couple of hours work by an experienced builder! I'd ask for a complete breakdown of costs - chances are you the price difference has less to do with the charges they are putting on the build and more to do with how much they would retail the parts at.

    FWIW, when I had my Look built, there was no charge for the build itself. The shop took the profit on the components (and their prices would have been higher than the likes of Wiggle) - if they'd have charged for the build on top of that it would have been excessive.

    Having just built up a bike from scratch myself, I now know I'd not bother the shop about such things and just do it myself!

    If you were buying the frame and parts from the shop, then given the healthy margins on parts I'd expect them to build the bike for free - if they're charging retail for the parts and workshop time on top, it's time to find a new shop.
    Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

    But then you would have a bike with wheels that don't fit into the frame.

    You mean just build & deliver? Sourcing is included in the mark up on parts unless you're paying cost price. Fitting is building. I'd expect to pay ~£150 for a bike to be assembled from scratch.
