Hi

Am considering a new road bike this year, budget £2.5K max, though preferably £2K, and so Di2 becomes an option. The reviews sound good.

- Is Di2 on a 2012 bike the same as that on 2013?
- Have you heard if the current Di2 is likely to be upgraded significantly next year? There may be some obvious issues that need ironing out – battery, reliability etc – though I haven’t heard anything.
- Do you think Shimano or others will ever spec electronic shifting on a cheaper groupo?

It sounds like they've got Di2 right but it'd be annoying to buy into it to see an overhaul soon, though it's interesting that I wouldn't have this concern with mech Ultegra. Such is the way with 'tech' isn't it... :)

Thanks
Paul

At the price point you are talking I am assuming you are referring to Ultegra Di2 rather than 9070. Ultegra Di2 in 2013 has not changed from 2012.

The obvious upgrade for Ultegra will be a shift from 10 to 11 speed - there has been a bit of debate on the compatability of the current Ultegra Di2 to 11 speed. Covered here : http://weightweenies.starbike.com/forum ... &start=780
  • Cheers Mccaria. Yes, sorry, meant Ultegra Di2. Good point on the 11 speed.

I'm sure when 7spd came out people were asking the same questions.
It'll always be updated, changed etc.

No built in obsolesence with a cable though
    Faster than a tent.......
  • Di2 has been proven to be pretty bomb proof and a lot of bike builders are putting it onto their bikes now so i wouldnt worry about buying into it. More and more people are, assuming they can afford it.

They may well come out with a new system possibly next year, but i doubt it will be a significant upgrade over the current system. Also its worth remembering that Di2 isnt new to Shimano, as they have produced Dura-Ace electronic shifting for a few years now, so Ultegra Di2 is the cheaper version but based on proven technology.

So i say, go ahead and enjoy getting the bike. Good luck
