Opinions on Wahoo RFLKT bike computer

As someone who uses Strava and has a compatible Bluetooth 4.0 heart rate monitor and speed/cadence sensor, I was quite interested in the Wahoo RFLKT bike computer - essentially an LCD screen and some buttons that link up to your iPhone running Strava (or equivalent) in your back pocket:

While it solves the problem of not having to strap hundreds of pounds worth of iPhone to your handlebars, at $130 I think it's just too expensive - that's a decent chunk of money towards a Garmin 500 or 800, whose battery will last all day right? My iPhone is dead in a few hours running Strava.

Any thoughts? Or am I missing something?

I'm seriously considering the RFLKT, I use an iPod touch with speed / cadence sensor. I understand your battery concerns but with the screen off it should last a lot longer...

Personally I think it is a great idea, I was hoping the latest Garmins would support Bluetooth 4.0 but they have stuck with ANT+ which I think is a real shame and a missed opportunity. I would have used my iPod on the Turbo trainer but maybe used a Garmin with my Bluetooth 4.0 sensor on actual rides.

Let me know how you get on if you do buy a RFLKT...

Price is way too high, it should be sub $50 for what it is, a waterproof led screen with Bluetooth!

Users could buy a Garmin edge 200 for about the same price.

I use Cyclemeter and love it, the stats and history are awesome. You mention battery life, if you don't need to look at your device, turn off mobile data, wifi and Bluetooth and it will last all day. I still had 20% after a 133 mile ride all day whilst my friends garmin edge 800 died. Buy a Tecknet charger which is light and you can ride around 400 miles without needing to plug into a socket or power outlet.

133.7 miles on one iPhone 5 charge. :D

I'd love to see some stats on the bike from my iphone and the Bluetooth draws next to no power, but seriously... $115 and it can't be taken off easy at a cafe stop... No way..

Agreed - I loved the concept of RFLKT, but way too expensive and I emailed to tell them so.

I really don't get this either. It's essentially a screen which is priced about the same as a decent cycle computer.

I use cyclemeter with an iphone on a biologic mount and i have to say it looks a bit too big on the road bike (its OK on the tourer), so I like the concept of a smaller screen - but i wouldnt add something that meant i still HAD to carry the iphone.

I could sort of see it might be a more viable option if it was at least a simple sensor based computer as well - so you'd get basic functionality when you didn't have your phone with you - but as it is it seems like just one more thing to worry about/lose/break. Maybe the price will fall a lot, if so would consider it. What I'd really like it for is 'real buttons' as lack of tactile feedback on the iphone means sometimes missing presses (annoying if you miss 'start'), and would mean could press buttons when in winter gloves, but again, that's a lot of money for a remote iPhone button.

Be interesting to see where this goes.

Waste of money, your worried about strapping something expensive to your handlebars but your considering spending a fair bit on something with less function and is still pretty expensive.

    I can honestly recommend this

    http://www.topeak.com/products/PanoBike/ridecase_ip5_bk

I've been using it a couple of weeks now and its proved solid, my phone doesn't budge at all, even over crappy roads, the cover that comes with it does a good job of keeping it dry as well. Probably wouldn't use it in heavy rain but for showers it would do the job. Mine was only £30 from Chain Reaction as well, bargain!

Thanks Chris87 - I hadn't seen the Topeak iPhone clip. I have been looking at the RFLKT as well, but agree that its a bit pricey for what you get.
  • My Strava iPhone app has been updated to work with RFLKT anyone know how this works with Strava?
