    you need

    wheels.
    and the discs
    and
    new gearshifters.
    not happening for 160.

    I like a challenge:

    Wheels and rotors, £65.

    Shimano M575 brakes, £26 each

I'm not 100% sure why new shifters are required, but I'd bow to Nicklouse's knowledge on this. However, Shimano Alivio 8 speed shifters for £28.50 here. I'm sure if I carried on looking you could get Deore for less.

I make that within your budget - you could sell the old wheels too. I'd want M595 brakes though, they are worth saving up for.
  • You'll probably also need some post mounts of some kind and some reasonable quality bolts to attach them with...

Guess the shifters will be required if the existing ones are integrated with brake levers. I've just done exactly the same change on a 12 year old rockhopper for that kind of budget. It needed one new wheel anyway but not sure I'd have bothered otherwise. Ridability still limited by frame and forks which will still be the same even with nice new disc brakes.

brake and gears are one unit in the bike. the gears can not be used without the brake lever assy.
