New bike for short(ish) trips

Hi folks,
I know nothing at all about bikes, so looking for some advice from people who know their stuff . My current bike is some £80 Trax rubbish which literally appears to resist forward motion - my housemate has an Apollo AL6000 which is an incredible amount easier to ride (it's far faster, and the chain doesn't fall off every 10m...)
Budget is preferably far less than £200 unless it's really necessary. I cycle every day, about 10 mins to Uni and/or about 10-15 mins to football training (have to go across a couple of fields for this so presumable a MTB would be the most suitable) and the gym so it's important to have a bike that's not going to completely wear me out before I get there, like my current one does.
From what I've read, Decathlon bikes are good and Apollo are terrible but, like I said, no idea really. Would this be any good?
