RockShox PopLoc replacement and stems

Hello all

Got into commuting six months ago and decided to get myself a reasonably cheap bike (Hardrock Disc 2012) to fiddle about with before getting something I'll regret breaking... :-) My riding mainly includes the road during the winter but hard packed trails and similar most of the time when not commuting.

After a while the (generously put) poor fork started to annoy me so found a cheap Rockshox XC 30 which is being fitted by my LBS at the moment. It came with a remote lockout mechanism that I would like to replace with a manual lever on the top of the fork itself. Anyone knows if it can be done, and if so what's involved?

On a related question I've decided to see if I can tune in a better ride by getting some new stems and bars to try out (less angle, wider and flatter bats). I've never taken the stem off or messed about with the headset so I'm just wondering what to look out for, pitfalls if you like, when getting the stem off and fitting a new one? I've got a set of spacers coming in the post for the eventuality that the new stems will be slightly taller or shorter than the original. Would a torque wrench come recommended, everything is aluminium?

Any help / information is greatly appreciated. Cant wait for the weather to improve to get out on the bike again!

/ Tobias

    You need to replace the whole damping cartridge, which is not cheap, unless you take it apart and remove the return spring inside it.

    As for stems and bars, what are the widths/lengths at the moment?

    @supersonic

    Thanks for the reply

    If it's going to involve anything that means taking the fork apart I'd probably prefer to not attach the remote lockout at all, just leave the mechanism on the top of the fork as is... Might not look pretty though... :-\

    I think the current stem has 30 degree rise, 90mm and I've gotten some new stems, all of which have less rise than the original to try out and of varying lengths. The original bar is 660mm wide with (I think) 20mm rise. Currently I've got a set of bar ends fitted which helps with position when climbing and when on flats. I've got two new bars (20mm rise and the other flat), both 685mm wide to try out.

    I've been lucky with the timing of the sales recently so decided to try out some new things. :-)

    Good to see that they've got parts should anything go wrong! :-)

    I would have hoped they simply sold a replacement knob you could just stick on (obviously removing the existing mechanism first) that would do the same job, but directly on the top of the fork.

    Unortunately the spring mechanism is deep within, you need the whole part.
