Hi all,

I have just found a website that have a number of interesting rides in my local area but some of routes are listed in a gpx format so my question is can this file be converted so that I can send it to my Edge 800 and if so can someone point me in the right direction as to how to do this?

Cheers in advance

Can GPS Babel convert to the right format?
How would I write my own epitaph? With a crayon - I'm not allowed anything I can sharpen to a sustainable point.

  • Copy the gpx file and place it in the newfiles folder on your garmin.
When you disconnect your garmin and start it the garmin will convert the gpx files to courses

    No need for any conversion.

D'oh! Yes - it's Garmin proprietary format!

    Thanks for the info, F77.

  • Thanks all,

That did work however it seems to be showing on the garmin base map but I have OSM british isles map on my memory card which is what my courses have been using prior to this and now the routing all looks different and not that easy to follow by the looks of it. Any suggestions? And if I delete the course will everything go back to using my OSM maps?
  • Phew got it back to the way it was before !

So anyone know how I can convert the gpx to the format that my maps can read?

When I download a course from garmin connect it seems to load up perfect on the maps that I am using if that helps?

    Thanks again in advance
  • GPX is the correct format. Are you downloading a gpx track or a gpx route? it may have some bearing on matters but unlikely, Do you have a link to the gpx file?

GPX, or GPS eXchange Format is an XML schema designed as a common GPS data format for software applications.

It can be used to describe waypoints, tracks, and routes. The format is open and can be used without the need to pay license fees. Its tags store location, elevation, and time and can in this way be used to interchange data between GPS devices and software packages
  • Thanks Freezing 77 I will do some research on your suggestions although it might be a little beyond my capabilities as I am just a simple builder lol

Yes I do have a link for the route from the website see below.

    http://www.mountainbikinginkent.co.uk/20.html

If that does not take you to the route I'm looking at it should be the Farningham one.

If you can advice any further it would be much appreciated.

I have looked at the Farningham gpx file, it contains a gpx route called swanley, these are not always the best for off road use but that should make no difference to the mapping.

Do you have only the OSM map enabled or all the maps? Can I suggest that you have only the OSM map enabled and disable the rest.

To do this Menu, spanner icon, system, map, map information select map, enable /disable as appropriate. Do this and post back.

Here is your route on my 800

    8465474840_ee980250c4_m.jpg

You will see some anomalies as the 800 recalculates the route when you load it using the via points contained in the file. Hence if you are off road or following non mapped tracks wich you are in this case it will throw up some glitches.

A gpx track file on the other hand ia a "dumb" file as far a the 800 is concerned and contains no "routing" info such as take the shortest route, avoid toll roads etc etc. All it contains is a series of lat and long points which the 800 will guide you to in turn. Hence better for off road use as the track you put on the unit will not change whereas when the 800 recalculates a gpx route there may be deviation from the original due to constraints contained within the file/ mapping /800.
  • See below for a gpx track file and a gpx route file, these both follow exactly the same path.

  • Here is a link to a gpx track file of your route.

    http://sdrv.ms/14NNx3N

PS You can view gpx files in google earth, this can show you how closely your gpx route follows the path on the ground. In this instance not particularly close.

To view a gpx file in google earth you need to start google earth and then use the file open dialogue box and choose files of type gps from the drop down list

  • Thanks again Freezing77 for all your help it is much appreciated.

I disabled the base map as you suggested and reloaded the file. Looking at it on the screen it seemed to show the route as it should be, however when I selected go instead of giving me step by step directions from the house i.e arrow pointing down my road then left right left etc etc. It just showed the pink line direct to the edge of the loop in swanley?

I think what I might do now is chuck the bike on the rack and drive over to somewhere on the route and see if it will pick up the directions from there what do you think?

I was kind of hoping it would be as easy as it is when i download a route from Garmin connect as when I do that it just loads on my device perfect and directions work sweet from my front door !

    Thanks,

Couldnt get the link to work seems I need to download something to be able to view will have a search about and see what I need when I get a chance.

managed to open the file in google earth but it didnt really look like the route I had showing on my 800 but again I will play with this when I get a chance.

Cheers for your time and efforet it is much appreciated.

  • A GPX route will give you turn by turn directions but the 800 will try to put you back onto roads and tracks when it loads and recalculates. I note that part of your route does not follow any path shown on OSM or UK discoverer maps.
Adding more via points is a way of getting round this limitation.

A gpx track will just give you an arrow and a line on your map page.
  • That line from your house is just taking you in a straight line to the start of the route, this is normal

That is what the straight line is on the screenshot of the route pictured in the messages above, except the line is much longer as it is from Surrey to Swanley!!!!
  • Thanks Gents for all your help.

    I think I have cracked it ! www.bikehike.co.uk

You can upload the gpx file on here and then download to garmin unit in a tcx format(what ever that is?) and hey presto route is in the 800 and directions to get to it. So all I need do now is get myself over there and see if it works lol
  • Well further research shows that TXC is the main track/route format supported by the edge units.

So if using bikehike to download routes best to use TXC format.

    Thajks everyone for your help

Your research appears to have misled you.
TCX files are proprietary garmin training centre (a type of software) files. TCX is a format that can be used on the edge units as can GPX files. Both to the same effect if created equally.
  • Thanks Freezing 77

So would seem I could use both only the TCX gives me the facility to navigate from my house.

Just need a break in the weather now to see if the routes are actually rideable!
