after some deliberation and needing some new parts anyway I have decided that 1x9 is a completely viable option
currently i have a 2009 rockhopper expert with xt m770 range throughout - except the HT2 SLX triple crank.
Firstly here is what I am proposing:
Hope 34t or 36t chainring for front
Superstar Chainguide
Shorter crank bolts
11-34 cassette
9 sp chain
medium length rear mech
Secondly (& according to the guide) I assume this will work ok??
cheers

That looks about right to me. Why not go 1x10 if you are swapping everything in any case? I've just done the same and got a Zee mech as it has a nice short cage.0

i had looked at 1 x 10, but that would mean the added expense of a shifter as well, trying to do this and sneak under the budget radar eyes of the wife haha0

True, I forgot about that. I managed to get one of those cheap pair of SLX 10 speed shifters from CRC a few months ago.0

having said that, it's proving a little difficult to track down the right 9 speed mech and the zee is £30 - which I'm sure i could probably raise from the sale of the xt 3 x 9 shifters
zee does look rather nice, how do you find it performs?
I'd be looking at the items above +
zee mech
zee shifter
slx cassette
??? chain

Have you looked at the likes of bike-discount.de and Rose Bikes? They usually have much cheaper prices for stuff than the UK.
Zee shifter is £20 off the top of my head, SLX mech is £30 or a Zee is £40 (the Zee has the clutch, SLX doesn't). I would personally go for an XT cassette instead of an SLX, not much more at £40 and is lighter for the same spec. I would go for a KMC X10 chain for the simple reason it is the only chain/brand out of Sram, Shimano and KMC that still uses a quick link, the Sram one locks into place so isn't usable. They're also brilliant chains anyway.
The Zee shifter performs fine, it's smooth and positive. Not as refined as my XTR's but you would hope not really. They are quite big compared to XT's and XTR's but it doesn't cause any issues, just means it isn't quite as light.0 -
cheers for the HE re bikediscount.de, 10sp r/h SLX shifter for £15!!! Also couple of other bits on nmy list are cheaper - all the pennies mount up but happy with the decent saving on the shifter
Alas the lower priced mechs seem to have gone and the zee is around £48
I assume there would be no issues with a 10sp SLX shifter and zee mech??
