Novice XC & O/R Duathlon

Looking to upgrade from old(2005!) mongoose after getting into some off road duathlons this winter and with a little extra cash available I've been looking at what's suitable which will suit a little xc racing(not looking/expecting to head the field).
Think hardtail probably is route I want to go down, although I do suffer fatigue on the rough stuff so was thinking 29er might help? Have a budget between £800-1200, initial feelings were a Cobia or Cube LTD but appreciate views of more experienced souls out there.
