Thinking of swapping SRAM Rival for Ultegra

Morning chaps.

Been riding my Boardman shod with SRAM Rival for 2 years now. Like it (the Rival) but prefer the Ultegra. Don't ask why, I just prefer the Shimano set up over SRAM.

I know the SRAM has way less than 2k on it, in fact the rear mech was bought last year and definitely has less than 500 miles on it due to work commitments last year (if it's got 200 miles on it I'd be surprised).

So, any thoughts?

    The weather.

I'd like seasoned riders opinions. Those who've ridden both & their opinions.

But you prefer Ultegra over Rival ? Not trying to be difficult - I just don't understand the question.

That's fine if you don't understand.

I'm asking those that have ridden both sets what (I've briefly ridden Ultegra) faults or pitfalls Ultegra has. I know SRAM is pretty bombproof so far but having had brief experience of Ultegra, I'd like to know what others think. Is it a fair swap, is shifting more refined/slicker, etc.

Next time - I'll draw a diagram especially for you or maybe a thesis? Just let me know, ok? :D

Ironically for you - I have actually ridden both. There are no pitfalls or faults with either system. Go with the one that has a lever/hood shape that you prefer.

They're just different. Ultegra feels smoother, but SRAM feels more positive, ie the changes feel more pronounced. I think SRAM brakes are better though. It won't change your world and seems an unnecessary change, unless you simply just don't like SRAM, either because of how it operates, looks or feels.

The only reason this would be worthwhile is if you were going to Di2, otherwise its just a waste of time, effort and money.
  • I can't say I agree with the swap after so little mileage, but it's your money. If you really prefer Ultegra go ahead I guess.
