Which noisy and crispy Free hub?

I'm not sure if the part is correct however I'll go ahead with the question (apologies in advance)

I'm assuming it is the free hub at the rear tyre that actuallys makes the 'ticking noise' when free wheeling; I'm actually looking to replace mine with something louder and crispier; can anyone recommend any?

I've seen and heard some bikes and the loud crisp ticking noise sounds awesome (although I understand quite a few don't like the louder noise)

Also, how do I go about replacing this, is it a case of taking the wheel off, and swapping it over or is it a little more trickier?

Thanks in advance

you can not you need to use one that fits the hub. they are not interchangable.

    buy a new wheel.

If you want 'hubs' with presence, try DT Swiss, Chris King, Hope or Campagnolo/Fulcrum

Alternatively, put a playing card in your spokes ;-)
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

  • As above, you need a new hub, possibly wheel... it is an expensive enterprise for the sake of having noisier freehub. You might want to consider cheaper alternatives, like fitting a bell for win you need to be heard.

Among the above mentioned, Hope hubs are probably the loudest

when a rider who uses those type hubs is free wheeling , those hubs sounds absolutely bloody awful and i cant imagine anyone handing out cash just to get that sound

Just seen the price of the DT Swiss (wtf!)

I'm keen but not that keen; don't want to throw money away so can live without the upgrade :-)

Thanks guys for the input, much appreciated

I am completely mystified as to why anyone would deliberately choose to be accompanied by a loud clicking noise.

    Perhaps someone could enlighten me.

Chris King hubs are fantastic. Entirely serviceable, amazing quality and a great sound.

Was actually surprised that they are not hat much louder than Fulcrum hubs. But apparently, the Pro 3s aren't as loud as the Pro 2s were.

    +1 for Chris King hubs.

Although I have had some well meaning souls advise me that I should take my bike to a bike shop to get it looked, at as there seems to be a problem with the back wheel

Good idea, investing 400 pounds in a loud freehub!

  • Strange request, I've always wanted the opposite. A silent one!

As Nicklouse already implied - they only make a noise when you aren't pedalling. It shouldn't be that often, outside of the big smoke, that you aren't pedalling anyway. Unless you are a bit soft.......

Incidentally, when I serviced the hub on a Campag Khamsin, I put the merest sniff of grease on the ratchet. All noise gone! Wasn't my intention but that's what happened. If you do want to get rid of a noisy hub, those who warn you off by saying you'll clog the pawls up don't realise how little you need!

If anyone is thinking of trying this, please note that it would be illegal in the UK

City riding, I like to scare children and let other riders know I'm there, wheel sucking..

I do miss a noisy hub riding riding fixed, it genuinely acts a warning of your presence, like to let it spin a little before overtaking people so they aren't so surprised.

I'm not sure if Ihave read this correctly, but are you saying you freewheel a fixed gear?
