Frame Protection

Hi All,

A question for those that travel with their bikes and use padding to protect the frame while in transit,
where do you get your padding from?
I've looked at pipe lagging but it has too small an internal diameter to go around seat and down tubes (max is normally 25mm but frame tubes are 32mm+).
I've also seen scaffold pipe padding but its very expensive.
Anyone any ideas to help?
I'm in no rush right now as I'm just planning for my trip to France in July. :?:

TIA

Pipe lagging works for me. Tape it on with insulation tape ? The foam will give. Also stock up on bubble wrap from online shopping.
  • If you have a decent bike bag / box, you really shouldn't need any, but I understand people wanting to be as careful as possible. The very largest size in our DIY shop just about does my main tubes (SL4).

Thanks for the replies guys. :)
I'm also considering this stuff I've found on ebay

Will need to try the bike in the bag and see how it goes from there too

  • Try going into your LBS and asking them for some of the padding from the new bikes they get delivered.
I'm sure they would give you it for nothing to save it from their business waste.

Your local supermarket might let you have the bubble wrap used to protect the fresh fruit in boxes from damage if you ask them. Its usually only thrown away for recycling .

Top idea dude. Could even get a box as well if its only going to be going in the back of a van or a car.
