Shop around and you should find one for £50.
  • I've just bought 2 new helmets, one for commuting and one for weekend rides, a Uvex Boss Race and a Giro Monza, both seem like decent good helmets, shop around and both can be bought for £50 each or just under.

The Uvex Boss Race is 40g lighter and your head fits in it as opposed to the Giro which sits on your head, it's also got bug netting on the two vents at the front which is a good touch and is extremely easy to adjust, after a short while you don't even realise it's on your head.

The Giro Monza is as stated above 40g heavier and it does feel like you have a helmet on, it feels like it would be more airy and better for long, hot days in the saddle (however i've not tested this yet), again it is easy to adjust but not as much as the Uvex, it does however feel like it would offer more protection in the event of an accident.

Different helmets fit different heads though so I would recommend visiting a few shops and trying on various helmets from different manufacturers to see which fits and suits you best.

I recommend you look at getting the very best helmet you can afford, even if its more than £50. This is something that could save your life so don't scrimp on this one item above any other.

Spending more is no guarantee of more protection. Often the cheaper helmets provide even better protection than the top of the line version. Not always the case but often enough. What you pay for in more expensive helmets is lighter weight, better ventilation and a better retaining system which sometimes results in more comfort. 50 quid will get you as much protection as 100. I recall seeing a government report about 2 yrs ago on helmets tested and this is the conclusion they came to. Unfortunately I can't find it now or would post it here. :| Also getting the right fit is very important in getting the best protection from any helmet.

I have a Specialized Echelon and Kask k10. One retails at £50 and the other £100. Is there £50 difference in quality - no but they are both great helmets. You can get a Kask K10 or K50 over at CRC for less than £50 i think so this makes it a good buy. My kask came with leather type straps and a skull cap for cold days. The fit is better on the kask as it seems to clamp around your head rather than sit on top.

I bought a Giro Savant and have been quite happy with it; it does look a bit like a mushroom but can be had for as little as £39. As others have said, pop to a shop and see what fits as they can be quite different. I must have tried about 20 different ones before I put the Savant on and it just seemed to go 'click', that's the one for me.

Sorry if it comes across as more money means better. I was trying to make the point of get the best possible helmet you can even if its more than the £50 quoted. I agree you can get some great helmets for under this price but I would rather pay more for a helmet that I felt was better for me personally. But, in your comment you say you will get as good a helmet for 50 as for 100. I believe that, but as you also say, The fit is important. A cheap helmet thats a one size fits all is not going to guarantee 100% protection if its not fitting right.
