Hi All,

Asking on behalf of a friend. He can get the cycle2work scheme and is looking to spend about £500, not much more. He's taken fancy to a Claud Butler Antaeus 29r:

I can't find any reviews of this, and spec wise- it actually looks pretty damn good for the money (same brakes as my Giant X4, which cost 3x as much!).

Anybody got any advice? I have taken him on red routes (eg. Afan, South wales before).

Thanks in advance.

Alistair

I wouldn't. Have a look at the sticky in Buying Advice.

    That one!

For a sub £500 29er that's not too bad, someone I know rides a Scott that cost £800 and is a worse spec.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

But 29ers are notoriously bad value - a normal 26er at that price would be a better bike.

I would normally agree- but did you look at the spec of that bike? I can't tell whats "so bad" about it. Unless I am missing something obvious? (Or if Claud Butlers have really bad reputation etc, hence asking here :) )

The fork is atrocious - the MLO version of the suntour XCM hence has no damping in there, rattles, tops out and generally ruins the ride.

Thanks for the info- will let him know :)
