First of all, I would like to point out that this bike has not yet been stolen.

My post here is due to the concern that it might be [confused still? read on...]

A friend of mine has locked his B'Twin up at university, where unfortunately, bike theft from the bike stands is not unheard of. His lock barrel has been packed with mud and grit [he does not ride with his lock exposed, nor is there mud or grit available nearby the bike racks] which stands out as deliberate sabotage. I am wondering if this could be an attempt to buy the thief more time to come back at night with come bolt croppers, and if this practice is previously known?

We are currently coming to his aid, and will prevent his bike from being stolen. My post isnt in urgency, more of enquiry really...

  • It used to happen at liverpool uni - and i remeber a few years ago some posted on here with teh same thing happening - let the police or the uni security know, best be safe.

Cheers! Wasnt sure where to post...

Bike free'd in the end, with some WD40 and a friend with lockpicks [a magician, not another crook might I add!]. Considered waiting, but didnt fancy being kicked off my degree for the trouble of battering a lowlife. Security are informed though.

To clear the lock if it's just mud and grit then a rinse with water would be enough right, but WD40 also good.

I dunno, in the future maybe tape over/wrap the lock's keyhole with duct tape a few times or something, make sure your pal has something with him to cut it off when you want to go home. Will take an extra couple of mins but worth it if it makes them leave the lock alone.

if you hadn't got the lock open
surely the uni security or police have bolt croppers and would come out to cut your bike free before the scallies get it if you ask nicely.

  • Put another lock on the bike while you are trying to get things sorted so any miscreant will have two to cope with.

I put my lock around both bikes [mine and his] and the post. its beefier, and harder to jam with grit and stuff.
