Which is the best resort to stay at for the passportes du soleil and any recommendations on chalets to rent!

    IMHO, Morzine or Chatel for good range of bars, a lot going on and proper Alpine village atmosphere. We have a chalet in Morzine with rentals specifically for the Passportes du Soleil week from Weds 26th June to Weds 3rd July, either per person or for the whole chalet http://www.wildbike.co.uk. Good to start PPDS event from Morzine or Avoriaz from here. Lots more advice on our website!

    I reckon Morzine is the best place to stay, it's quite low down, so easy to ride back to if you get stuck in avoriaz/les gets etc after the lifts stop running. Plenty of places to stay, I stayed with riders retreat self catered last year and they were ace.

    ^^^^^ True! We got stuck in Morzine at 6.30pm after a 12 hour day in the saddle and had a 6km ride uphill to Les Gets, which to be frank was a pain in the arse.

    We're staying in Les Gets again this year which has a relaxed atmosphere at night, good restaurants and a few descent bars (from memory there were half a dozen to a dozen bars open at night). As most people have commented it's slightly quieter than Morzine but by no means a ghost town... we're a group of 4 x 35 yr olds and it's cool for us.

    Chalet wise, have a look on Owners direct or the Morzine / Les Gets official website - loads on there. Just keep an eye on location, some are a good 15min walk out of town (usually trade off location with having a pool or hot tub though!)

    One last thing, you mentioned about going out for PDS - which we did last year and really enjoyed. If you're planning on riding the week before PDS (i.e. last weekend in June) the lifts will only be open in Les Gets and Morzine, all other lifts open on the PDS weekend

    I'd recommend Chatel as this is where the "Salon", i.e. the exhibition, is taking place this year.

    Morzine is a busier town than Les Gets. Nit more happening there.

    I have stayed in both Morzine and Chatel for Passportes

    I would recommend Morzine for numerous reasons, most have already been given, if you miss last chair lift or the weather closes in and they shut chair lifts, Morzine is probably easiest resort to get to in area.

    Morzine everything is close by and lots of choice and all on flat and its not wild by any stretch of the imagination but it does have some atmosphere, where we found Chatel to be dead. Morzine isn't a big place either.

    In Chatel we found much smaller and most of bars are up top of the hill in the center away from many of Chalets, so after a day riding to get to bars you have a slog up hill, if finished at bike park, or you take the Passport Route down to top of town, but need lifts still to be running.

    Id choose Morzine every time imho :)
