  • 85 front, 90 back. My main bike has 27" wheels until I change them, and so I use 1 1/4" tyres, or 32mm.
  • Tend to run mine at 115 front & 110 rear.
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

The correct pressure is a combination of load (weight) and tyre width to prevent pinch punctures vs comfort. The rating on the side of the tire is the maximum for that tire, not the correct pressure to use.

    See the chart on http://www.bikequarterly.com/images/TireDrop.pdf

Somewhere around 100/110psi for tubs on a smooth circuit / or between 80/90psi on clinchers for general road riding. Why? because I'm 68kg and it feels about right.

    Thanks for the reply
Having just had a pinch puncture on a pothole a friend had pumped mine to 120psi and feeling rather solid

I was once helping a friend pump up his tires and when I asked him how much PSI he wanted he replied "116". He then told me to go ahead and put in 120. After which he spent 10 minutes or so with a hand held gauge deflating to 116.

Now, normally I'm rarely at a loss for words but in this case I couldn't even speak while I watched this happen.
  • I just put in 100 front and rear because I know no different. The wheels seem to go round and round when I pedal.

impossible to get a pinch flat at 120 or even 80psi. something else happened.

  • Around 110psi summer and 90psi in winter, although different bikes and tyres.
At the moment there's normally down 40psi before I pump them up. How often do others pump up tyres and what's the pressure before you start?

it isn't impossible - you just need to be heavy enough, or hit the obstacle hard enough.

I've had snake bites at 100psi on 23mm tyres - as you say - of course it's possible!

Well I keep snakes and the state of my bike has no effect on whether I get bitten or not

So, newbie question. What's a snake bite?

    It is either:

a description of a pinch puncture where you hit an obstacle (pot hole or stone) so hard that the inner-tube is compressed against both sides of the wheel rim, resulting in 2 holes, one either side of the inner-tube, like a snake bite

or a drink consisting of equal measures of Cider and Beer :D

Another vote for 100 front 110 rear, though I am becoming increasingly sceptical about the accuracy of the readings from my (JoeBlow) track pump :|

You generally get a lot more than 2 holes, believe me, but thanks for the answer

    100 front 110 rear; 700c 23; 80kg rider, 8kg bike.

I pump every other morning and before a long ride; they generally seem to have fallen to about 80/90 psi between pumps. Butyl inners.
