Memerable for JTL's performance last year, the 2013 Tour Med is underway. Some decent hilly stages, a tough 24km TT with an up-hill finish and a decent summit finish on stage 4.

Starts hilly today but flattens out.

Startlist Here (on the right hand side): http://www.steephill.tv/tour-mediterraneen/#rosters

Ones to watch: Tommy V, Rolland, Pinot, Andy Schleck, Talansky, Roche, Krueziger, Mollema, Nieve, Chaves amongst others - good startlist and looks like it could be a good early season race...

Don't know where we are at, can't find a feed and nobodies tweeting.

Enjoy.

  • Greipel wins Stage 1

Gorilla and Cav are looking pretty imperious, these early days

Dan Martin, Pellizotti and Thor Hushovd also riding

Greipel for the first stage? doesn't look like there are a lot of other big name sprinters

That should be fun. A lot of good climbers on the startlist.

    Oh poor kid.

  • Would be more news if Greipel hadn't won. Haven't heard of many in the top ten.

I like this race and if they manage not to shorten the best climb due to poor weather it will be a great battle. Lots of names I like on the start list.

I hope it isn't freezing like it usually is. I remember the race being super fast last year as they were so cold they wanted to get to the finish faster!

Anyone know when Greipel and Cavendish will first race against each other?

  • Definitely cold - Greipel had full leg warmers and a neck warmer.

Cofidis helmets are absolutely revolting (Mavic).

Don't sprinters who target Milan-San Remo normally pick the Tirreno over Paris-Nice? They both did last year. Not sure that applies this year, though

Yeah, thats the tradition. But Goss did P-N and went on to win MSR 2011. And Gerrans did same last year (not a sprinter, I know). Times are a changin...

Last year though, Rod Ellingworth said that Cav was undercooked at MSR as Tirreno hadn't been hard enough - 'not fit for purpose' he said. It's why the Sky classics squad are skipping both and doing a training camp.

  • I love Gruissan - good for a weeks holiday in the stilted beach houses ( where they filmed Betty Blue) and sailing . Excellent muscadet and a great bakers/cafe to fuel up before venturing into La Clappe

It's extremely windy today - gusts of up to 85km/h forecast, from the north. No shelter on the coast road either.

I wonder how many riders are going to use deep section wheels (and end up in the dunes!)

    Stage 3 cancelled.

Still unclear of the reasons for this - something to do with authorities in St Remy de Provence not ensuring the proper road closures??
  • According to La Provence, Friday's parcours in the finishing locale of Saint Rémy de Provence couldn't be secured and after failing to find an alternate route, the stage had to be canceled.

Barring that, info on this is very thin on the ground. Seems very suss!

It was cancelled by Prefectural Order due to "unsatisfactory security conditions".

apparently Boom used his CX skills to do a bike change from TT to road bike for the final climb

Seems that the reason was a last minute change of mind by the local (Bouches du Rhone) préfecture on the grounds that the probable disruption of traffic, especially in Marseille was unacceptable. The local authorities in Saint Rémy were not happy as they planned a fete to take place to mark the event.
