I've got a Dell Inspiron N5110 with 4GB RAM and Intel core i5 processor. It does laptopping very well, but it is actually a bit wider than my lap (if you're worried about portability).
It's the 3rd Dell I've had and I've never had any problems with them. They're cheap but seem OK.0 -

Thanks Mike. Size no issue as it will probbaly never leave the house. Just don't have the space for a permanent desk top set up.0 -
Avoid Dells like the plague
I got an HP from John Lewis for £480 and am well pleased with it
