Hi, just taken up road riding. Will be riding an 18mile commute. And want a good jacket that will keep me dry, but is breathable. Moon on a stick I know.

Dont think I need waterproof as such as if I get wet it will dry. However do need it to be high vis as likely to be riding at night and early morning.
Please help.

You may get better (more informed) answers on such things in the Commuting section!!!!!

We are too busy faking Strava and assasinating folk for wearing the wrong gear and buying the wrong wheels (unless thay say Mavic on them) to care

  • Cheers smidsy, so what do you wear when road riding? As this will double up.

9 miles each way or 18miles each way?
If it's the latter then you need some serious clothes. If the former and not ridiculously hilly then something like this would be good with not too much underneath. the legs also need attention in the extreme cold .

night vision is about 80quid. and more reflective, but you could wear a hi-vis waistcoat for a couple of pounds.

I have a Windproof Long Sleeved item that is part of my club kit along with a clear lightweight race cape. Not sure that will do the trick for commuting although as you can see from my Avatar it may well class as Hi Viz :P

  • Smidsy I like you. Witty is good.

Its 18 mile each way. Was thinking the evo, but its a lot of cash and the missus is gonna kill me soon.

    Anything else.

Essentially IME it is better to go for a latered approach rather than a single really warm jacket.

The softshell types are good e.g Gore Windstopper. as the key is keeping warm (because you will get wet). Combined with a nice baselayer this works well.

You can then add a lightweight waterproof that packs down really small for added protection in really wet weather.

There is also the option of putting a Gilet over for even more warmth.

At your budget it is going to be tricky.

  • Well I have layers as I already cycle (mtb).

Was looking at the Castillo squadra, as an over layer. Only 38 quid and bright. Which may do me. I find if I get too hot I tend to lose performance quite quickly so want to be relatively cool when riding.

Be careful with Castelli as the fit is a bit fat bloke, tend to be short and wide.
Started a thread a while ago about a good lightweight shower proof jacket and was recommended the Montane Velo h20, which I've just bought in Fluro Green for £40 (from Merlin IIRC) and its lovely, highly reccommended.
