Play in Rear Cassette

I have removed the plastic guard from between the cassette and rear wheel and I have ended up with play in the cassette.

Do I need to fill in the gap left with one of these 1mm spacers?

    nope.

    the spoke protector has no effect on the cassette it is attached to the spokes not the freebody.

    sounds like you have not refitted the cassette corectly or something needs adjusting. or it is normal.
