Hi,

These guys seem to get some good reviews, any comments before i lash out on a pair of training wheels ?

Have been looking at relatively base model A23s or their H plus rims for about £300

Cheers

Only on the A23s - cracking rims, and even though mine are 32hole, they ride light!
  • Look, I wrote a review of the Archetype here

    http://paolocoppo.drupalgardens.com/con ... -good-rims

They are both excellent rims, the archetype builds better, probably because it is a touch heavier. It also looks a lot better.

Depending where in Derbyshire you are based, you might want to consider Just Riding Along in Sheffield, they also build the same rims on a wide range of hubs... I find it is a lot easier if you live close to your builder, in case there is a problem, or you want your wheels to be checked before a big event. Strada are based on the south coast, not very convenient

Strada built me a pair of wheels using H+ Archetype rims (24/28 spoke count) and they're superb. Not particularly cheap, but got good advice, excellent service, and beautiful wheels.

Anyone that charges £100 for a wheelbuild ought to do a good job.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

They have an expensive business model... Premises and two staff. They probably try their best to be competitive in their own way. As far as I know they do reasonably well, so the slightly higher price does not put off everybody. At the end of the day there are plenty of people who spend 5 K on a bike, 50 pounds more or less what difference does it make for them?

I believe a certain sky rider has wheels built by Darren @ Strada, so they must be doing something right :D

Wiggins? I have heard a lot of stories of alleged wheels made by UK builders for Wiggins, including Pete Matthews and Paul Hewitt, now Strada... I wonder how much truth there is in these rumours...

I told a friend I had made a set of tubulars for a guy on the Isle of Man and within hours I received emails from former club mates all flushed and excited about me building wheels for Cavendish...
I can confirm these rumours are completely unfounded...

    i appreciated the help, thanks!

i bottled asking for white spokes though... mainly because when i used to play football every saturday and sunday about 10 years ago, i had to rush into town after my boots were nicked, the only pair they had in my size (13!) after mine were these white adidas beckham style ones, i got kicked to f*** that season as everybody thought i fancied myself a bit...!

    never make that mistake again!

    White boots in a size 13 :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
In my day people would have said "who do you think you are ? kevin Hector ?" then kicked you !
FWIW though as footballer turned cyclist I think white spokes are cool.
Football boots are black, Campag on Italian, same rules apply !

To answer the earlier post on Wiggin's wheels - I did bump into Brad in one of these establishments..

Should have clarified earlier post, by my estimate it was £100/wheel unless of course they're really rubbish at sourcing parts...
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Have a build from them ... love the wheels - despite being relatively heavy i use them for serious mountain climbing over my climbing wheels as they are so solid (using chris king hubs can't hurt I'm sure). They are expensive relative to other builders but my build -- with those hubs -- was just a bit more than stock hed Ardennes clinchers!

One piece of advice is to be very specific on everything -- from spoke count to type of nipples.

I can't speak to other builders as this is my first custom set. But if I go 11 speed will have them do the rebuild for sure.

  • One piece of advice is to be very specific on everything -- from spoke count to type of nipples.

I would disagree... what's the point of talking to a builder if you can't trust his advice?
Is the kind of advice aimed at making you spend more money? If so, go elsewhere, I hate the salesmen type... someone like Harry Rowland will most likely convince you to spend less money ,rather than more

    Hi,

A lovely set of black architect rims, built on to black ambriosio hubs with black spokes arrived yesterday and took them out for first ride today. The run great, are spot on true and look pretty cool with my black and white canyon.

Excellent workmanship and service from just riding along in sheffield.

Reckon i should order my mtb wheels or some race wheels form strada though, plenty of great reviews!

Why? If you are happy with their service, why paying more to get the same from someone on the other side of the country...?
MTB wheels are easy to build, you can do it yourself...
