Steroids on a racing licence

So I went to the Doc today and was prescribed a course of steroids for a throat problem that's been dogging me for two months (should have gone sooner but I'm male). He knows me and asked if I raced much, I said I got a racing licence last year for one or two races. He pointed out I'd fail a drugs test (which British Cycling are allowed to conduct on me and I agreed to when I signed up). Now as a 45 year old amateur who races twice a year I'm not that bothered, especially as I'll be off them in 7 days. But it does raise the point that a pro cyclist or a determined amateur would have been stuck and unable to take legitimate medication. They'll be well out of my system by spring and I didn't take them to cheat.

It backs up something I've thought for a while, pro cyclists take a hell of a lot out of there systems but are denied a lot of "normal" medical care due to the rules. Just doesn't seem right, although it could be open to abuse of course.

    Drug-testing in rugby?

    Probably to make sure they're taking enough? ;-)
    Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • In broad terms the WADA banned list contains;

    1) Performance enhancing drugs - Say no more really defined as out and out cheating.
    2) Masking agents - these are drugs often prescribed with a genuine medical reason, however if you took a test for PED's it would show nil and therefore the test has been extend to include masking agents too.

    You can check if your specific steroid is on the banned list here - http://www.wada-ama.org/en/Science-Medi ... ited-List/

    The Therapeutic Use Exemption info is here - http://www.wada-ama.org/en/Science-Medicine/TUE/

    BC have tested amateur racers in the past - http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/lat ... r-epo.html

    I joined the cycle club and also paid for the licence, however, my only intention is the keep fit aspect and also joining the local club for cycle runs and maybe the odd day event from the cycle magazines.
    Do you need a licence to do these events ? If so, are you liable for testing ?
    This is purely a question based on me being inquisitive and not being a drug addict btw.

    Good for joining a cycling club, and no you dont need any form of race licence for a sportive event in the UK and you certainly will not get 'tested'' except by the parcours.

    Sportive & club rides not a problem. Racing then you could be.

    I don't think he meant it as a personal insult. Just that they're more likely to test those who finish in the top three.
