I have managed to catch tonsillitis, I've had it 3 days now and providing I keep up with the painkillers consuming water is ok. Is it advisable to ride though? I haven't gotten on the bike since winter and would love to get out soon.

I went out Sat with a chest infection and wish I had not now.
Do not see what harm having tonsillitis will do but I am not a doc lol
Have had tonsillitus though and it was horrible. I got it a second time quickly after the first (I think that is common) and nearly cried at the thought of going through it again!

Do NOT ride with Tonsillitis. I used to suffer with it a few years ago and it would wipe me out for a week. Went down with proper flu this Xmas and wasn't fit to ride for a week after I started feeling better, just felt very weak. Just be patient as you might otherwise be putting your recovery back even further. Sucks not being able to get on the bike, but better safe than sorry....

  • Unlike colds, flu, measles, chickenpox, and others, tonsillitis is likely to be a bacterial infection.

It doesn't make you feel as ill as flu does, but chances are that your tonsils now resemble huge purulent twin aliens growing in your throat that makes swallowing very difficult and painful.

It could easily take quite a while to clear up on its own, so it's one of those things where it is actually quite good to get some antibiotics from the doc to clobber it.

Finish the course, lest a few non-clobbered bacteria mutate into a antibiotic-resistant strain.

My brother had tonsillitis recently and got back to cycling too soon - relapsed twice. Doc said he had to get lots of sleep and rest while on the antibiotics.

I used to get it once a year, and it totally wiped me out for 2 weeks when i did, the bike was the last thing on my mind.

Lat time I had it, i had flu symptoms as well, I actually thought i was dying! ok I am a man, but jesus i was rough.
Definatly dont ride, recover properly, and only when you think its gone ease yourself back in, as you will just prolong the recovery. It sux.. but you got to do, what you got to do.

when I had tonsillitis I basically spent 5 days in bed feeling like death... are you sure you haven't just got a sore throat?

either way its not advisable to ride.

(this reminds me of the 'should I ride with flu?' question that pops up from time to time.. a little common sense is required!)

Pretty much what the others said. There are different types of tonsillitis. You should rest for both. Most tend to be bacterial, which will respond to antibiotics and will generally clear up in 5 days or so. Viral tonsillitis can be properly evil and can last a couple of weeks and can recur. In that situation, you can need more drastic action (I had my sinuses drilled).

  • I had mine removed at the age of 35, horrid time. Hard enough swallowing with tonsillitis so I wouldn't recommend cycling with it.
  • Thanks for the advice guys, very much appreciated. I haven't had the guts to go out. To be honest I have just felt pretty awful and tired so not in any mood to venture out on the bike. Also, because of pain when eating I have resorted to water, milk and soups. Nothing else really so I don't have the energy required to cycle very far at all. As soon as its all gone I will go for a short ride to see how things go!
  • What is it with people that can't work out that they're too sick to ride?

Tonsillitis: can't swallow without agonising pain without constant painkillers.

Chest Infection: can't breathe properly sitting down, pain, coughing, bronchial tubes on fire.

Conclusion: going out on the bike is the perfect way of improving health.

    Hmm, seems legit... :D

Any one that can ride a bike has not got flu.

Nope stay indoors. I would recommend lying on the sofa and telling everyone to leave you alone.

If you have Netflix, watch Icarus and then 100 yards. Although they might make it harder not being able to ride.
