Afternoon All
Has anyone recently had a renewal quote of their M&S Home Contents Insurance?
They used to offer cover that seemed to be really popular on here - unspecified items up to £4000 covered most peoples pride and joy, which meant i could cover my steeds at home or away for around £350 a year.
Well, renewal document has come through and 1. price increased to £428 which i wasn't too bothered about although i hadn't claimed, but 2. now they want pedal cycles over £2000 specified.
No problem i thought, i'll phone and let them know what ive got - bloomin hell, nearly fell off my chair - new premium quote now £1021 for the year.
Seems that any items you had specified over £4k you no longer need to specify - the policy will cover it - that is except for bicycles!
I suppose for most people £2000 cover is pretty good, but for those that used M&S because of the £4k limit - watch out for your renewal.
I'm off to shop around for something else.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm off to check mine.
Do you think they still cover individual bike components up to 4k that may or may not have been put together in a similar shape and function to a bicycle?0 -
Thanks. Ours is due in May so will check it out.
Only have one bike worth over 2k at the moment. Its a pain as I liked not having to specify anything.
M&S only worked out cheaper due to that. Is good cover though.0 -
After a quick flick through the stolen bikes section of this forum, I'm amazed you can get cover at all.
My cycling license gets me damage and theft cover up to 3500 Euros for 120E a year, which isn't bad, but the bike does have to be locked.0 -
Yep they changed it a little while ago for all new customers & as and when existing policies come up for renewal. Still have mine with the but the bikes covered on a separate policy.Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.0

Interesting I've just gone through an online quote (so totally new customer). They wanted me to list any bikes over £1000, which I did (one value just under £4000). The quote I got was for about £500. How many bikes did you specify?0

Interesting heads up.
Bugger.
Not looking forwards to renewal time now.0 -

I know that most thieves would likely leave the lock behind. However, I've heard that if you don't have evidence of the broken lock - you can't make a claim. May not apply to all insurers, but I've heard it happen a lot.0 -
Odd, I've renewed my M&S cover since the change to £1000 for new contracts and I specifically asked about the change and was told that for renewals of existing insurance, the £4000 limit is still in place. I've also checked after renewal and that's still the case (a few months ago).
I was told to be careful I don't let any renewals laps otherwise you'll be put on a new contract with the £1000 limit (the guy in the call-centre insured his own bikes there).0 -
I too have been experienced this annoyance. Now to find another insurer with crap underwriters...0
-
So they might still keep it on a renewal then?
Mrs felt it was good cover so would be nice not to have to switch.
It was only cheaper due to high limit for specified items.0 -
I think M&S is great cover - and when I made a claim they were very quick and didn't take the ****. They paid up via bank transfer when I was still on the phone.
Give M&S a call and confirm the T&Cs are the same regarding the £4000 for a renewal.0 -

They're not. It explicitly says so0 -
That's a real shame, they were the same a couple of months ago.0

My renewal was due 20th Jan, maybe the new terms start for customers renewing in 2013.0

M & S also cover fence panels if they get blown down in heavy winds . Not all insurance companies do.0

I had the same with m & s insured my colnago which was covered for everything even away from the home for about £160.
I had this years renewal and bang £608,i told them no and got it with john lewis for £125Colnago c60 Eps super record 11
Pinarello F8 with sram etap0 -
Is the £2k limit based on new price or current value? If current value, is this agreed beforehand?0

I would be happy with mine being worth/insured for £2000 rather than have to specify it.0

@markyone did you haev to specify on john lewis? as far as i can make out they have a 1k cycle limit.0
