Hi

As a general consensus, how do people rate these XO brakes? Work well or better off with SLX or XTs?
Thanks
Constantly trying to upgrade my parts. It is a long road ahead as things are so expensive for little gain. n+1 is always the principle in my mind.

Avid brakes are terrible, Shimano brakes are rather good.

I have just taken a set off my bike. DON'T DO IT!
They are light and they work ok when bled well but they are difficult to bleed properly (compared to Shimano or Hope) they are unreliable and fragile and the wrst thing is spare part prices, £170 for just a single lever body! Thats more than double the price of XTR.
Go for Shimano XT or XTR. Even the new Deores are better (though a bit heavier).

I had some XXs, they were utterly dire. Avoid.

    What they all said ^^^^^

Shimano have the brake market wrapped up imo. Avid are too fragile, unreliable and require a world class bleed to work properly. Formula (newer ones anyway, the older k18/24's are good) are ok but squeal like a pig in the wet, pads don't last that well, the levers are kinda awkward for some too, I can never get the reach close enough on the bikes I've tried with them fitted. Hope lack power and are abit pricey, they do look very nice though!

I have 2 sets of Xt's and they are awesome, wouldnt have anything else tbh

Echo the above. I had elixir CR's on one of my bikes and they had been great for about a year, wondered what everyone was complaining about. Put a set of SLX's on last week as I fancied changing them and they are in a different league. Would not go back.

I'm fairly sure I pointed out on your original thread that a complete X0 brake is £100, from numerous online suppliers.

Anyway, let me know when you're selling the remains of the X0s... :)

I know, but that's Avid's rrp for that part. X0's are removed.
Make me an offer, complete front brake and rear caliper with damaged (or possibly not, I'm not convinced) lever body and a few sets of spare sintered pads.
As an xc brake I wouldn't rate them as badly as other have said but they came on my DH bike so they weren't up to the job and my new Shimano Zee brakes are much better.
  • Just so we're clear, these are the 2 pot elixir type, and not the 4 pot miniature codes?

And the levers have reach adjust, but not "bite point" adjust?

    That is correct.
EDIT - They do have pad contact adjustment

Stay well away from Avid brakes. Not worth the hassle really when brakes like the current Deore's are so cheap and good.
