Anyone have any experience of amateur racing in Italy? I did my first one today in Sicily - quite an experience! http://www.andbethere.com/2013/02/my-first-race-on-continent.html here is a report of it, let me know any thoughts :)
And for those of you who have, did you find that there's no real categorisation like with BC? Here it all seems to be age group organised, so you get all sorts in the races! Great fun though, and definitely a good early season test for the legs :D

interesting story. I'm confused by the category system (or lack of it) though - is that how the amateur scene runs over there or was this race a one-off, or run under a different set of guidelines, or something?

Yes, they race in age banded fields: 15-18 are called Debuttante, 19-27 are Cadetti, 28-32 Juniors, 33-39 Seniors, 40-47 Veterani, 48-55 Gentlemen, 56-62 Super Gentlemen-A and 63-70 Super Gentlemen-B

'Super Gentlemen' - what a great name for a category.. ;)
  • Yeah it's very different. It does however mean loads of trophies! After this one race there was a cup for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in every category!

  • Did my second race on Sunday after a 2 week break - a flatish course this time in Palermo. Here's my report on it: http://www.andbethere.com/2013/02/my-second-race-out-in-sicily.html. Unfortunately there was no trophy :( on this occasion, but it's all a learning experience...I've never heard so many people shouting absolute nonsense at once as these experiences in southern Italian peletons! Crazy stuff! Unfortunately the same former doping pro who won last time cleaned up once again!
Let me know any feedback :)
