I do a regular circuit but when I upload my data to Strava from my Garmin Edge it does not register one particular segment. No problem with any other segments but a bit infuriating when my training partner always manages to record a time, have checked the track and it matches my partners on his I-phone, cannot believe it is any sort go GPS glitch every time. Any ideas how I can get my Garmin Edge to recognise this segment. I have checked and it is not hidden.

  • Does the segment fall within your privacy Zone?

No, miles away but thanks for the suggestion.
  • Sometimes there is "Show hidden segments" at the bottom of the page. That might help!

Thanks already checked that, thinking I may try it with another device, quite baffling.

can you link the ride and the segment so we can have a look?
  • I've seen this before and it was due to the poor quality of the gpx track as recorded by an iPhone 4S.
Does your track deviate from the actual route you took?

Not sure how to do this. I have submitted a request to Strava with the details for them to have a look, I will report back when they reply.

No, the tracks are identical, interestingly my training partners i-phone 4S recorded it perfectly it was my expensive Garmin that will not recognise it. Have now ridden the segment 6 times and it has never recognised the segment.
  • Another thought - is the segment private? I.e. your partner created it and kept it private rather than public? That would explain something.

    Not a private segment.
  • Do other riders using a Garmin show up on the segment?

There are 165 people listed on the segment. I assume some must use a Garmin, is this information available on Strava? I am certainly no expert.
  • It sometimes displays the rider info on their ride metadata. Whats the segment url?

  • Going by that quite a few are using garmins - 705's 800's forerunners even - you could open the gpx file in a text editor, its simply an xml file and compare it to your mates to see if the ride is actually being recorded on that section

Are there any garmins more expensive than an iPhone :?:

Looking at the segment you posted, it doesn't look like it follows the road very well, and there are parts where the points are quite far apart, joined by straight lines, suggesting a low sampling rate. Perhaps the problem is the other way round - the segment could have been created by an iphone, and the accuracy of your garmin is making it miss the segment?
    who knows?
You could always flag it to get it removed, then re-create it based on an accurate track.

I have this issue as a friend created a segment from an iPhone and it is very blocky and finishes in the middle of a factory. I can't follow it on my 500 and nor can anyone else. Good way to get KOM methinks

Just create your own duplicate segment from one of your rides.

I've had a similar problem on a short segment where I'm trying to get KOM, and using an Edge 800. Twice now, I've gone up the road only to find that the segment and time wasn't recorded. Bl**dy pain in the a$$.

  • Are there settings in the GPS device which you can change? Frequency of update etc?

There are tools out there to 'clean' up your data, or Strava will do it for you to match segments.

This is true, and worth a try.

Just to update the query I have had a reply from Strava, it was my fault as I was not triggering the segment, it appears that there is enough GPS drift in my training partners i-phone (i assume this is because the phone GPS is triangulated between masts) to trigger the segment.

Sorry for the confusion. Actually though, this segment starts a bit west of the intersection where you usually turn onto London Rd. If you go to the segment page http://app.strava.com/segments/1505036 and click to satellite view and zoom way in to the segment start you can see what I'm referring to. The segment start is actually a bit west of where Bull Hill Rd meets London Rd.

Although you did match this on one ride where you didn't go back west to this point, that was only because you seem to hang out around that intersection on London Rd a bit and you had some GPS drift around that point and eventually one point matched the segment. It was kind of a bad match but our algorithm is loose enough to allow this sometimes.

So if you want to match this segment in the future you'll have to back track on London Rd a bit then turn around. Or you can create a new segment for the way you ride this stretch of road.

So, problem solved but I would like to thank you all for suggestions and to Strava for looking into my problem, they have a great product and a good customer service for a free product.

    Oo ... a segment I've ridden ... and recorded ok with my Garmin 800 ... ;)

My speed for that segment is rubbish though because I stopped at the Golf Course entrance for a snack stop ... and it was part of a 56 mile route so it was never going to be an outlandish speed!
