Front Mech Advice

Hi all,

I have been upgrading various parts on my 2007 ish GT aggressor XC3 over the last 6 months or so and have become a little stuck in finding the information required for me to get a new front mech.

I swapped by crank from the standard suntour square taper item to a good used set of octalink Deores. Problem is my front mech is mounted on a plate that between the BB and the drive side cup. The deores have a larger diameter outer ring compared to the old suntours and now my mech wont shift to the big or second ring as it fouls on the largest one. The mech in question is about the only part i havent upgraded on the bike so far and im quite happy to put another one on. As its mounted on a plate i dont think i can adjust the height?

My question is......


Do i need to get a BB mounted mech as a replacment? or can i simply remove the old mech, put the cup back on without the mech bracket and fit a seat tube mounted replacment?
