Disaster Day.... Who else managed to get out today? We got out as usual and set off at 9am headed off into the back lanes of the Yorkshire dales and as soon as we left skipton our ride today turned into a disaster. Black ice everywhere, a lot of people in our group crashed, thankfully no serious injuries, mostly ego's I think....

As most of us are self employed we decided the conditions were too dangerous and a risk not worth taking.... So cut our ride short, in a nut shell we only managed 25 miles... What had potential to be an amazing day with clear sunshine was actually a disaster...

Gutted. Who else got out today and how was it?

    Sorry to hear that :-(

Weather is fine further south where I am so made it out ok.
Chest infection made it a bit tough though. I felt it was kill or cure ........... but I do not feel cured

Keep a watch on your local weather forecast. I was commuting today and it was all fine, supposed to be much warmer tommorrow, but pretty windy.

@ Vtech - Looks to me like you will be getting a warm and windy day tommorrow, it should be fine, set off late morning or early afternoon. :)

I was just down the road (Skipton side of Harrogate) for a mountain bike orienteering event at 09:30 this morning. There was a good deal of ice on the roads, especially near Arncliffe, but i managed to stay rubber side down for it all. Amazing what difference a few miles (and wider tyres) make!

I don't envy your mates - i was off 5 times to black ice on the MBTO event over Pockington way in Dec :(

This afternoon I was on the new road bike round dewsbury/bradford and either there hadn't been any ice, or it had melted.

Yes we were riding toward kilnsey on the main road which is where they all come down. We managed to flag a police man down who went straight there to arrange the highways to deal with it.... Cars still driving on there like race cars though.... The main roads coming back from skipton were fine.

Weather tomorrow is forecast to be around 5 degrees so should be ok tomoz, like other poster said, go out slightly later and give the sun time to rise....

  • Hope you guys are all ok and it is only damaged egos!

All ok down here in the sunny south - no ice to report and got out for a lovely 45miler on pretty dry roads today. Brilliant sunshine for most of it. Plenty of others out too.

But your post is a reminder to still be careful - its not spring yet ;)
  • I'm in the North East and the club ride was due to set off at 8.30 but got cancelled as there was black ice all over.

So I ended up having to take my little girl to ballet class at 10 and the pavements and side roads were lethal. Was glad I hadn't ventured out for a ride.

Was itching to get out on the bike though so went for a spin at 1ish and the main roads were all fine, managed 30 miles including some semi-rural roads without noticing any icy spots.

Felt nice to be outside after being stuck on the turbo for the last 3 weeks.
  • A fair bit of ice this morning just south of Dewsbury on our club cafe run, certainly enough to be worrying. Was melting on the way back though so hopefully all gone by now.

Hmm, It was nice in Holland, Took the MTB up to a new trail. Even the sun came out to play and gave me a bit of a "kiss"

  • I saw ice on the roads yesterday morning. Left the bike in the garage. Looks like it was the best decision.
Woke this morning to high winds, horizontal rain but a good bit warmer than yesterdays bitterly cold morning.
Itching to get out and about but just think I may leave it in the garage again today.

Got out yesterday for a short ride (i.e. sub 20 miler!), had planned to go longer but the cold, ice, bad side winds combined with new aero wheels, and leaving later than planned due to me tinkering with the bike resulted in such a short distance. Was a lovely day, sunny and clear, just bitterly cold.

Thought I'd maybe get out today for longer, so hauled myself about of bed at 8am pulled back the blind aaaaand it's bright sunshine, 60F and all the trees were in leaf, couldn't believe my luck, no actually it was miserable, throwing it down with a very thick fog. Sick of winter now, the lack of light and rubbish weather. Punxsutawney Phil says spring's a-comin though.
