This is a little build thread to document the upgrades on my girlfriends bike. She has had it since new but never really enjoyed riding it as its such a heffer! Over 15KGs...

So I am trying to get this a bit lighter for her and upgrade it at the same time. She wanted disc brakes fitted as the v's become useless in the wet. I had a few bits and bobs spare to fit such as Hayes cable discs, Formula disc hubs, Kore bars, Shimano skewers and an LX mech. I ordered some budget rims (Alex TD17s for £15 the pair) and some spokes to suit.

Wheels lost over 300g due to the rims mainly, but the cable discs unfortunately put that weight back on but at least its central too the wheel. Over 150g was lost upgrading the bars, mech and skewers. I will trim down the hefty seatpost once we have worked out the best post height for her.

I have scored some Manitou Black Elite 80/100mm forks for not much money which should save a nice chunk of weight and be far more controlled than the current RSTs. Some lighter tyres are next on the list, and then some cranks, aiming to lose a kilo off the bike in total minimum (lost 3kg off my 15kg rockrider full sus with pretty average parts...). I may use this as a chance to upgrade my own bike and swap some bits over 8)

The Manitous are about 1600g so you'll have a useful saving and quality improvement there (the Son has 120's on his Scott).

These are the coil ones I think, which are 1800g I believe? Do you happen to know if they can be converted to air easily? Did it to some Judys and some Z3.5s years ago, but they simply needed a new top cap to do it.

I will have a look at your thread, I already have a pretty good idea of where the weight is (I have been weighing stuff as I go and keeping a record, just like with my own bike) and have checked weights on weight weenies to get an idea of the weights of parts that are within budget and where I can save decent amounts for the least money!

To convert to air is a new CSU and air unit, not worth it.

1800g is still a useful saving over the circa 2.25Kg the RST's probably weigh.

The Blacks were 1800g exactly! I also have some X vert E forks that are 1700g (with a 50mm longer steerer). The RSTs were 2730g....made of lead I would imagine

Blacks had a service as soon as they arrived, unfortunately some scoring has occured on the stanchions, however I did buy them as part of a job lot that was listed as spares repairs so my own fault for not asking (looked fine in the photos!). Consequently the forks are not as smooth as they could be but still an improvement over the RSTs regardless. The spring is a little hard for her weight (although about the same as the RSTs), so I may hunt out a softer one. I am tempted to respray the X verts and fit them instead as they are in far better condition, lighter and have a softer spring already

Are they elastomer? Does explain the lack of oil squelch! They have a really controlled rebound so I guess thats a positive...

If they feel ok then no probs! I remember the MBUK review years ago - they thought the E might have stood for 'empty' ie no damper lol.

Ha ha, I do seem to recall a review like that, but this was back in the days where I rode trials and didn't care about xc forks!

Those RST's are impressively heavy! so near enough 1Kg saved there!
